Jai
August 10:
Ayla's words, 'we're engaged' flowed out, and the gasps and shouts that followed barely touched my ears. I was focused on her, and the aura of happiness that was radiating off of her. Her mother was rocking her back and forth in a hug, reminiscent of a child. Then suddenly, my neck was being pulled down into a squeeze that I had honestly been waiting to feel for days.
My mum's arms were tightly gripping me, and I couldn't help but return the hug. I squeezed back hard, and smiled the biggest grin, I think my parents have ever seen.
"Oh Jai, baby, I can't believe you didn't tell me," mum whispered in my ear just before she pulled back.
With tears in her eyes, she lightly pawed my cheeks with her hands.
"And miss this moment?" I asked her.
She then put her hand on my chest, and just smiled up at me. She was nearly shoved away by my sister who full-on jumped in my arms.
"YES!" She hissed, as I held her up. "This is amazing!"
I laughed, as I glanced back to Ayla who was swarmed by her girlfriends, but busy in my dad's hug. The charming smile on his face, as he tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Her blushing cheeks, and damp eyes never looked so sweet. When my father released her, our friends attacked. Showering her compliments and squeals. Just what every girl dreams of, right?
"Hey man," Daniel approached with two cold beers in his hand. "Welcome to the family."
He passed me a bottle, then shook my hand, pulling me in for a hug. That gesture alone, had me feeling emotional. It didn't help that my sister caught every word, and and burst harder into tears. Don't Clare, I'm not ready to cry yet.
"So this definitely went from graduation party to wngagment party real quick," Dylan announced, while approaching me with Joel.
Gripping each of their hands with a shake, I chuckle.
"Congrats man! Totally did not see this coming," Joel said.
"Oh, I did. Totally saw it," Dylan added.
"Oh yeah?" I asked, taking a swig.
"No you didn't," Joel joked.
"Oh, please. A romantic vacation, no one had any idea where you were going. Yeah. I had a feeling," Dylan answered.
"Shit. You're right," Joel responded. "Dude, you full-on Nicholas Sparksed this, didn't you?"
I laughed out loud.
"No. It was sweet. Perfect. Romantic. Greece," I breathed, as my mind instantly went to that night. "At least I hope it was those things. That's what I was aiming for."
"I'm pretty sure you accomplished it," Joel said, sarcastically.
Suddenly my dad came up to me, followed closely by Ayla's mother.
"How could you keep this secret?" Dad laughed, before putting his arm around me.
"Oh, Jai, you sneaky sweetheart," Tanya joked with a grin, and misty eyes.
I smiled while I embraced her open arms.
"Naw, not sneaky," I said near her ear. "I'm crazy about your daughter. I was just waiting for the perfect time."
"Oh, you adorable thing," she grinned, as she pulled back, patting my cheek almost exactly like my own mum did moments ago.
"Did anyone know about that you were going to pop the question?" Dad asked.
