It was hard to be different. Not only different, but clumsy to the point of ridiculous.

You spent a period of your life staying indoors, away from danger, and away from humiliation.

Turns out that wasn't possible on the day your house caught fire.

~

You woke up and almost immediately went into a state of coughing, finding yourself surrounded by smoke.

Standing up quickly, you tried to waft the smoke away from your face with your hands as you made your way towards the door.

Upon opening your bedroom door, smoke and fire filled your senses and you began to panic once you realised there was no way of getting downstairs and out of the front door.

"Y/N!" A voice shouted.

Startled, you turned around looking for the voice of a person - a species you hadn't seen it in almost two months, apart from yourself - and wondered who it was coming from.

"Y/N!" The voice shouted again, and you ran to the window, opening it and looking down to see your neighbour, who you knew as Liam.

"You need to come out this way! There's no way you'll get out otherwise." He tells you, beginning to climb up the side of your house.

"I-I can't climb." You stuttered, as his eyes softened, an expression you could only identify as pity.

"It's okay, I'll help you." He assures you, reaching your window as he now gripped onto the window frame, his feet placed securely as they could be on the wall below.

"No, I can't." You protest, knowing with your luck, one of you would fall.

"Yes you can, I've got you." He tells you, reaching his hand out for you.

"You'll fall." You warn him.

"It's a risk that's worth taking." He tells you, wholeheartedly.

"Now take my hand and I'll slowly help you out, deal?"

"I-" Your protest was cut off by the sound of banging.

"W-what was that?" You question.

"It was an explosion from inside. Y/N, come on, we need to get you out." Liam demands.

"Maybe it's a blessing in disguise." You mutter, but he shakes his head.

"Don't you dare say that. I will not give up on you, even if you're giving up on yourself." He tells you, firmly.

Looking at him, his brown eyes showed compassion and truthfulness. Something you hadn't seen directed towards you in a while.

"You don't even know me properly." You say, grabbing his hand.

"I know enough," He replies, helping you out of the window.

You hitch one leg over the windowsill as Liam holds you steady.

"Almost there." He tells you, helping you onto the wall he was stood on.

"You don't know anything." You argue.

"Then maybe you can tell me everything." He responds.

"No chance." You scoff as he wraps his arm around your waist, helping you down onto the step below.
