I just read on Twitter that Harry's character in Dunkirk is called Tommy, so I'm including that name in the imagine alongside Harry... That might sound confusing, but you'll see what I mean :) <3

I hope you enjoy. <3

Dear Y/N,

1 June, 1940.

The war is a very brutal place; a world you cannot imagine, unless lived through. I've seen some horrific things, but please know that I am doing fine, and that I will be home soon. My training is going well, and I am learning fast. The Sargent even said I will make a very worthy, useful and brave soldier. That's good news, darling. This means I'm a good fighter and will most likely come out alive, and believe me, I will fight hard to make sure I do, for you, my love, if not for myself. I promise I will try.

Please know, my sweetheart, that if I do not make it out of Dunkirk, that I love you with everything I am and that I will always be looking out for you. Always.

All the love, your Harry. Xx

Wiping the tears away, you read over the words of the letter. 'Your harry' was always the way he signed his letters. It was his name, after all, but in the war, they had renamed him Tommy for safety reasons, while he was fighting on the front line.

The war was often surreal, and you watched in terror as other families lost their loved ones: fathers, grandfathers, children, husbands, partners, brothers and much much more.

You fear for Harry's safety, of course you do. He's fighting a war, one full of rage and hatred. But to say you aren't proud would be false.

He tries so hard in his training, putting in all of his efforts so he could become a soldier worthy of fighting for his country; someone to be remembered, and someone to survive.

You doubted him, still. Thoughts swivelled through your mind day and night, and you couldn't seem to stop them.

What if he's fighting now? Is he alright? Is he hurt? What if he's been injured? What if I get the dreaded telephone call to say what so many others have experienced?

Yet Harry's letters once a week gave you the hope and courage to press on and go to work in the mills, helping to create uniforms for the soldiers who were fighting; those including Harry.

Dunkirk was nearly over, the battle persisting since the 26th of May, and Harry didn't have long to go, you just hoped he could make it through.

The storm raged around the house, clanging against the windows as it reminded you of the present war you were living in.

You pulled the covers closer to you in the hopes of maintaining warmth, yet all you could think about was the fact that Harry was out in this. The weather may not be a storm in France at this precise moment, but he was outside, sleeping in a trench, with no blankets to keep him sheltered from the weather.

You hoped for calm weather for him, and that he was sleeping soundly and at peace, with no fears or worries in sight until morning.

A bang was heard at the front door, keys jamming in the lock as they twisted it open before it closed abruptly.

You sat up quickly in bed, looking around for any object you could protect yourself with.

"Y/N?" A voice called; a voice all too familiar.

"Harry?" You called back, slipping out of bed as you lit some candles in the hope of it bringing you light.

Heavy boots trudged along the floor before you were met face to face with the one man you had feared you may not see again.
