My head was light. I heard bits and pieces of the conversation occurring but it was too far to make out all the words. It was the bite in my neck. The vampire venom was slowly taking over my system. Maybe it was a good thing because I no longer felt cold.
My hand went onto the steel door. Banging my fist with the little energy I had, I yelled out, hoping someone could hear me. There was rustling on the other side of the door along with a voice that I recognized. Luna. The door was pushed open, revealing the twins and my sister.
Mateo's eyes examined my body, completely dissatisfied with what he saw. His hand formed a fist that he held at his side. But I couldn't stop looking at my sister. She's here with Rowan and Mateo. I can't believe they spoke to her and went to her for help.
"If you hurt her, I will-"
The other vampire stepped in front of me, preventing any of them from coming closer. "You'll what? You're in no position to be bargaining. If you want her back, you'll have to pay," Jonathan spoke and I could feel how agitated my sister was. I can't believe she came here.
"How much?" Luna questioned, receiving an amused laugh.
"I don't want money," Jonathan looked at Mateo who wouldn't take his eyes off of me. I couldn't look at him back. Meeting his gaze would make me tear up. A smile formed on Jonathan's face.
"What's stopping me from ripping your heart out right here, right now?" Mateo threatened, gripping his shirt to throw him against the wall. My eyes shut on me and I brought my fingers to my eyes to rub. All my limbs were numb, but I did my best to not give in. I just needed to wait.
"Last time I checked, there's a law in place that prohibits affairs between you and a Hyland witch. Witches offer good rewards to vampires who choose to work with them," Jonathan had a smirk on his face like he wasn't the one with a hand wrapped around his neck. "It's in your best interest to keep me alive. If I don't make it home tonight, I have someone who will make the call and make sure her coven is aware of the fun you've been having with one of theirs."
Rowan's hand went onto Mateo's shoulder, trying to force him back but Mateo would not budge.
"I have no business with witches. I despise them and quite frankly don't care about your little bond with one. What I do care about is that you've stolen something that's rightfully mine," he spoke before Mateo let go of him. I laid back onto the cement, feeling my body give out on me.
"Abia," Luna whispered as she rounded the vampire and come into the room. She knelt beside me, bringing my head onto her lap. "She's been bitten," she announced as she moved hair from my face.
"She's lost a lot of blood. Fred here found it hard to stop. The venom must be in her blood already. Tell me love, are you feeling tingles? Lost feeling in your legs yet?" Jonathon teased, only adding to Mateo's anger.
"She needs your blood, Rowan," Luna panicked, softly running her hand along my face. Rowan attempted to step forward but the heavily tatted vampire—Fred—stopped him. "Give him what he wants, Mateo!"
Mateo's jaw tightened, running his hand down his face. "I don't have it," Mateo lied like they wouldn't know. Luna's hand went up, bringing her hand into a fist. My eyes widened as Mateo coughed, blood shooting from his mouth. He held his chest like he couldn't breathe. She was squeezing all his insides and stopping him from breathing.
"Luna. Luna, stop. Please," my voice was gone and my throat was so dry that it hurt to talk and breathe. I placed my hand over hers to bring it down.
Falling to his knees, he finally caught his breath. "I don't have it. But I'll get it. Let her go. I'll stay," Mateo offered, struggling back onto his feet to walk over to us. This time Jonathan didn't stop him. He knelt and bit into his palm to bring it to my mouth. I dreaded this part—irony and bitter taste of his blood. "Take her," he instructed Luna, as he helped me onto my feet. Using his strength, he yanked the chains from my hands and feet, the weighted agony finally leaving me. Mateo removed his jacket and placed it over me.
