Chapter 26

"Kerri, he can't work. How many times do I have to tell you that?" Caroline said in aggravation as she paced back in forth in Luke's hospital room.

"And I'm just asking why," Kerri explained. "Let me talk to him."

Caroline glanced at Luke, who was still in a coma. A sadness washed over her. "He can't talk, Kerri."

"Caroline, sweetie, just tell me what's wrong with him. The sound of your voice worries me."

Caroline took in a deep breath, she was trying so hard not to cry. "He's in a coma. He got hit by a pick-up truck. He's doing good, though."

"Oh, Carol, I'm so sorry about that. Just hang in there. I'll deal with his shows and such," Kerri told her before hanging up. Caroline tossed her phone on the table and collapsed in a chair.

She played with Luke's broken phone and tried to figure out how she could save it. She then looked up at Luke. Slowly, she walked over to him. She grasped onto Luke's hand again.

"It's been a couple days. Are you going to wake up soon?" Caroline asked, before glancing at Kelly, sleeping in her portable pack 'n play. "Don't you want to see your daughter? Sometimes I wonder if you can hear me. You know, the doctor told me you migt have amnesia when you wake up. I'm hoping you don't, bit just in case you do, I'm your fiancée. I still love you, I'm still here. I'm not gonna give up on you. Gosh, Luke, I just miss your voice and your smile. I miss seeing those gorgeous and astounding brown eyes looking back into my own. I miss your dumb jokes and your romantic gestures. I want nothing more than for you to be okay again."

Caroline's father knocked on the door before walking into the room. Caroline turned away from Luke and looked at him. Waymond smiled and held up a bag of take-out. "Hey, I brought you some McDonald's."

She softly smiled. "Thanks, Daddy. Do you think Luke will wake up soon?"

Waymond handed her the bag and shook his head. "Just think about the day that you'll marry him. No negative thoughts, okay?"

"But what if we never get marry? What if he can't escape this a coma?" Caroline questioned.

Waymond ignored her question. "Did you call his parents?"

She shook her head. Why didn't she think of that? His parents deserve to know whether their son his okay or not. "I just want everything to be okay again!" Caroline cried out. "I love him, Daddy."

"I know you do," Waymond sighed before sitting down. "Just call his parents. You'll be amazed at what support youget from them.

Caroline nodded and reluctantly let go of Luke's hand. She went over to the phone and dialed his mother's number. It rang twice before she had picked up. "Hello?"

"LeClaire, you need to come down to Sandersville! Luke got hurt, real bad!" Caroline panicked into the phone.

"Okay, honey, can you explained what happened?" LeClaire asked calmly.

Caroline took in a deep breath. "He was hit by a pick- I'm sorry, LeClaire, I can't relive that moment," she whispered as she started hyperventilating.

"I'm gonna call Tommy and Kaye and we'll be down before you know it," LeClaire told her before hanging up.

Caroline hung up and the held onto her father as he comforted her. She needed some air, but she didn't want to leave him. What if he woke up? What if he died? The tears began to soak her father's face.

Why did this have to happen to him? Why couldn't he wake up? Why couldn't he tell her everything would be okay? That's what he always did when she was upset and felt like giving up. But it's hard to do that when he's in a coma and he's causing the hurt.

Waymond rubbed Caroline's back slowly. "Hey, sweetie, you can go outside for a bit, eat your burger. I'll stay in here with Kelly and I promise to get you if Luke wakes up.

Caroline nodded before getting up. She grabbed her McDonald's bag and walked over to Luke. "I love you, baby. Please don't give up on us," she whispered into his ear before kissing his forehead. She then walked over to Kelly and did the same. She turned to her father and smiled. "Thank you, Daddy."

"Anytime, darlin'," her father smiled back to her.

Caroline stepped out into the fresh air. For the first time in awhile, she actually smiled. Luke was the last thing on her mine. She had no worries. She had cried to much.

But didn't she have a right to cry? Her fiancè had slipped into a coma after some guy hit him with his truck. Caroline was just surprised that she didn't go after the dude. He was lucky she wasn't going to sue him. Boy, was he lucky. On the other hand, if something happened to the man she loved, she could guarantee what she'd do.

She rested her hand on her pregnant belly. If anything, the stress wasn't good for her little boy. Then a thought crossed her mind. Research showed that people in a coma could hear things, but could they feel? What would happen if Bo kicked while Luke's hand was on her stomach? Would he smile? Make a noise? Wake up? There was only one way to find out.

Caroline rushed back into the room and grabbed Luke's hand and placed it on her stomach, waiting for her son to start kicking now. Waymond gave her confused look.

Finally, Bo kicked. She then saw Luke's lips start to curve. Waymond looked on, flabbergasted. "What? Is he?"

"I think he's waking up," Caroline whispered. "Luke, baby, come on. I wanna see those gorgeous eyes of yours."

Luke groaned, but didn't say anything. LeClaire, Til, Tommy, and Kaye all rushed through the door and Waymond quieted them down. "Shh, Luke might be waking up. Oh, and I'm Caroline's father."

"Come on, babe," Caroline tried to encourage him.

Luke finally opened his eyes and looked at Caroline. She immediately hugged him, crying tears of joy. "Oh, Luke! I love you so much!"

"I love you too, Carol," Luke's voice came out hoarse and tired, but he still said something.

Luke was glad Caroline was happy, and that his family was here for him. But, he wanted to know what had landed him in the hospital in the first place. "What happened?"

Caroline chuckled. "Baby, just let me have my moment for a bit," she whispered before kissing him passionately.
