7 • Despair

Five Days Remaining

Zoey

"Where are we going Onii-chan?" Onii-chan leads us through the bad streets. Loud noises keep shaking the ground every couple of minutes, people are screaming... I squeeze Onii-chan's hand and hold it tightly.

"We are going somewhere safe Nii-san." I giggle as he picks me up and begins to carry me.

"Wait! Onii-chan!" He stops and looks at me. "Where's Lizzy and Kal-Kal?" I give him an 'I am serious' look, getting a sigh out of him.

"They had to go. We are on our own now." Tears form in my eyes. Lizzy promised not to leave me alone, she promised with Kal-Kal.

"W-Why did they leave?" Onii-chan begins to walk again, holding me close to him.

"Nii-san, remember, you are always safe with me." I nod and cry into his chest.

"Why do people lie Onii-chan?" I keep my hear buried into his shoulder, tears still falling off of my cheeks.

"They lie to try and protect the ones they love." I stay like this for what seems like hours until I drift to sleep.

"Go away now." I lift my head off of Onii-chan's shoulder and look at the two soldiers in front of us.

"Onii-chan?" He looks down at me, giving me a small nod before looking back towards the soldiers.

"When I say, you shut your eyes." Onii-chan puts me down and pulls out his katana sheath. I gulp as I watch the soldiers raise their guns at him.

"Onii-ch-"

"Now!" He charges at the soldiers, unsheathing his sword and plunging it into the stomach of one of the soldiers. I turn and shut my eyes, a gunshot going off in the alleyway. I hold in my tears as a hand clasps around my shoulder. "Keep them shut until I say." I nod as Onii-chan picks me up and carries me into an open area, the wind making me shiver.

"Onii-chan, I'm cold..." He pulls me closer to him.

"You can look now." I nod and look over his shoulder, smoke rising from the buildings behind us.

"I'm scared Onii-chan..."

"You will be safe as long as you are with me Nii-san." I hug him as we continue to walk, burying my face into his shoulder.

"I love you Onii-chan."

"I love you too Nii-san." I keep him close to me as I find myself drifting back off to sleep.

Five Days Remaining

Samantha

"Did you take the pills this morning?" I nod at the doctor.

"How long will I have to take them? Shouldn't they have already helped the baby as much as it could have?" The doctor smiles at me before squeezing my hand.

"You only should have to take a couple more." I smile at him and thank him as I am escorted out of the room.

"You okay?" I look over at Derek and smile.

"Yeah, I just have been having this stomach ache for a while." Derek jumps down from his cot and kneels down in front of me.

"How many weeks pregnant are you?"

"Three." Derek nods at me and stands, setting himself next to me on the cot.
