Part 4 - Everything

It's Thursday and I hear my phone ringing at the same time of day as it has for the past three days. I answer and am greeted with the same voice.

"Hey," Jace says. "You want to hang out today?"

I smile because of course I want to hang out with him today. My days have been spent looking forward to my evenings, "I would love to hang out today."

"Okay. A few of my cousins are grabbing dinner and I thought we might go with them, is that good with you?" he asks.

"Yep. I'll be ready."

He picks me up and as we walk out of the house, he leans over and elbows my arm, "I got you something for your birthday. I know it's a bit late."

My birthday was the day after my dad had passed away.

"Why?" I whine. "You didn't have to do that or get me anything!"

"I know," he laughs as he watches me slide on my helmet and struggle to fasten it. He walks over to help me, "I wanted to."

I look around thinking that maybe he attached it to the motorcycle. He sees me looking and laughs again. "You'll found out what it is soon enough."

We make our way to the restaurant and I step off the bike. He stands up from the bike and turns toward me with that same smirk on his face. He takes his helmet off and watches as I struggle to unfasten my helmet and slide it off. He shakes his head as I try my best to fix my hair. I sit my helmet on the bike to unzip my jacket. "What are you laughing at?" I ask, paranoid at how bad my hair must look.

"Nothing," he says as he glances down at my helmet.

I follow his eyes and gasp when I see it. I pick up my helmet to take a closer look, "You didn't!"

"I did," he says smiling.

"I love it!" I say and I run my fingers over the letters that spell my name that are now written on the back of the helmet I had been wearing all week. "So does this mean this helmet is mine now?"

"Well, there is no one else riding back there," he says with a wink.

Friday comes and he picks me up in his Jeep soon after he gets off from work. I was so happy when I was around him – and yet, my heart was breaking with each passing day.

I was heartbroken because he has a girlfriend, January. We just had an incredible week together and I often wondered if my feelings for him were mutual but my mind would quickly go to his relationship with his girlfriend. A girlfriend that he has been with since we graduated from high school three years earlier. A girl that, although she lives in another state, he is head over heels in love with. I knew his time of being a really good friend to me was almost over. I would return to work and things would go back to the way they had been prior to my dad passing away.

He has a girlfriend and my song for him was "Everything."
