Part 34 - Facebook

I wake up the next day to several missed text messages all from Jacob, beginning innocently enough and ending pretty roughly with the last message reading something along the lines of him never wanting to speak to me again. Since our breakup, and really the five years prior during the time we were dating, this is the first time that I've actually stood my ground and ignored his antics.

The next few months go by pretty smoothly and we make it through the holidays with little mention of January and not hearing much from Jacob.

We celebrate many firsts together – Jace's birthday, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. New Years is spent apart as Jace and his brother, Easton, take a snowboarding trip to Alaska. It's at the beginning of that trip, while Jacob is in town for the holidays, that the past can't seem to stay away.

My phone rings and I rush to answer it. "Hey, did you guys make it?" I say as I look at the time. Their plane was expected to land in Alaska about an hour before and I have been patiently waiting to hear of their safe arrival.

"Yep, we just got loaded up and are heading in," Jace says. "Flights were good and they didn't lose any of our luggage."

I laugh. "That's good. Well, I won't keep you because I know you are probably exhausted. Be careful and touch base when you can! Have fun, babe!" I say as I walk to the bedroom to get ready for bed.

"We will. Love you."

"Love you," I say as I hear the call waiting beep. I look to see my best friend Elena's number and click over.

"Hey!"

"Hey, Lay," she says quickly and I immediately know something is wrong. "Have you looked at Facebook lately?"

"No, why?" I say wondering what drama I've missed since the last time I checked.

"You may want to go check out Jacob's page. He's posted some songs and statuses that point to you all. He doesn't come right out and say names, but it's pretty obvious."

I sigh, "Great..."

"Sorry, but I figured you would want to know. Call me later after you've looked," she says as she hangs up.

I immediately go to the office to see what Jacob could have posted. He had been doing so well in not texting or calling as often and I hadn't noticed anything on Facebook in a while so I had hoped we were all moving on.

I search his name and immediately realize I was living in some sort of naïve bubble. The first post I scroll across is a country song called "That Aint My Truck" - clever. The next few statuses are drunk ramblings about heart breaks and losing the one. Several other country songs have been posted but I stop when I see that he had posted Keith Urban's song "Making Memories of Us."

He had posted that song just a week before. That song. Our song.

I scroll to the top of the page and realize why I hadn't seen him post anything in a while as I stare at the words "Add Friend."

I debate on texting him but what exactly would I say? I instead make a phone call to Alaska.

"Talk to me." I smile at Jace's greeting.

"Hey, babe. Sorry to bug you, I know you all are trying to get settled in but I figured you would want to know before you came across it yourself or someone told you besides me," I say as I lean back in my desk chair and look at a framed picture of the two of us at the lake. His now long red hair is falling into his eyes and his lips are pressed against my cheek. We are both laughing with our eyes closed and my bare arms are wrapped around his neck. It's one of my favorite pictures of us.

"Okay, what's going on?" he says with concern in his voice.

"Jacob has posted some stuff on his Facebook page that is obviously related to us. Songs, statuses, drunk ramblings..."

He sighs, "More than normal?"

"The song stuff is new. It's normally just random vague posts but this stuff is a little more obvious...and desperate. He also deleted me as a friend, which is perfectly fine, but I think he did it so I wouldn't see his recent posts." We live in a very small town and still have a lot of mutual friends, I'm not sure why he thought deleting me was going to prevent me from knowing what he was posting.

"I think I'm just going to call him," he says. "This has went on for far too long. I haven't said anything yet because I didn't want to cause additional drama but at some point this has to stop."

"I doubt he will listen to anything you have to say but if you think it may help, I say go for it." I hate that all this has happened when he isn't home. "Don't let it ruin your snowboarding trip, though. It can wait until you get back."

"Nah, it won't. And besides, it may be for the best that I'm not in town," he says with a smile in his voice.

I laugh, "Okay, then. Let me know what he says."

"I will. Text me his number and I'll call him once I go look at his Facebook. Love you, babe."

"Love you," I say as I hang up the phone. I text him Jacob's number with shaking hands. I shouldn't be nervous because, really, what could happen. Jace is in another state, for crying out loud. I sit back in my chair and wait. I try to pass the time by scrolling through Facebook – which doesn't help.

I jump when my phone rings and almost drop it trying to answer, "Hey, what did he say," I ask without saying hello.

Jace laughs, "That was the oddest conversation I've ever had in my entire life. He kept saying that he didn't mean anything by the posts and that we were cool."

"Are you serious?" I'm not sure if I'm upset that Jacob's not owning up to his behaviors or relieved that nothing came from the phone call.

"Yeah, I'm not sure what he meant by 'we're cool' but he kept saying it over and over to everything I asked him about. He also said he would leave you alone and stop posting stuff, so there's that."

I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders but I'm still skeptical. "Well, I guess there is nothing to do but see what happens then. Sorry you had to deal with that tonight."

"It's fine, babe. I just hope he really did mean what he said. Let me know if you see anything else but right now, I'm going to bed. I have a long week of snowboarding ahead of me and I'm exhausted. I'll call you tomorrow."

"Okay, sleep well. Love you," I say as I hang up the phone. I text Elena to let her know what happened and walk to my bathroom to finish getting ready for bed. It's already late so I quickly brush my teeth. My phone dings but I finish my routine before I check to see what Elena has to say. Only it isn't a text from Elena that came through. It's a text from Jacob.
