I walk back towards the house and find several guys leaning over a jet ski with Jace in the middle. He sees me walk up and nods my way, "Just one more minute, babe. I've almost got it."
I laugh knowing that really means he probably has a good 30 minutes left in working on whatever is wrong. I find a stool to sit on and watch the guys banter back and forth on what the problem could be. Enderly walks over and leans against a table beside me and crosses his arms.
"If I knew Jacob was coming, you know I would have warned you," he says, never taking his eyes off the group of guys and his jet ski. "I know you don't want to be around him."
I smile appreciating the fact that he always looks out for the best of others. Underneath his bad boy persona is a huge heart. "I know," I say as I elbow his arm. "But no drama here tonight. We will be leaving as soon as he is finished."
I hear the jet ski fire and look over to see the guys smiling and nodding their heads. "Which looks like is going to be sooner rather than later."
I slide off the stool and Enderly pulls me into a half hug. "I like the two of you all together," he says, nodding towards Jace. "You keep him in line, alright?"
I laugh, "Easier said than done." He laughs with me, shaking his head.
"He sure does know his jet skis, though," Enderly says as he slaps Jace on the shoulder.
"You ready to go? I think I've done all the damage I can do for the night," Jace says as he drapes his arm across my shoulder. "See you all later!" he yells as we walk towards the Jeep.
"You okay?" he asks as we climb into the Jeep. "You've been a little quiet tonight."
I tuck my left leg underneath me and get comfortable for the ride home. "Yep, I'm good," I say as I glance out the windshield to see Jacob walking towards the house. He slightly waves with his left hand as he walks towards the group of guys we just left. "I'm just ready to be home."
I glance over at him looking to where my eyes had just left. "You know you are probably going to be back out here in a few hours taking him home. He's already drunk," he says shaking his head.
I glance back towards Jacob, "Not this time."
----------
It's 2:30 in the morning when I ignore the first text that comes through.
Jacob: U lookd real pretty tonight
The next fifteen minutes is filled with sporadic dings as my phone continues to receive text messages that I ignore.
Jacob: Im drunk texin.
Jacob: We can b friends, right
Jacob: R u up? Or jst ignorin me?
Jacob: I dnt think I should drive
Jacob: Can u come get me. Im at Ensrlys
Jacob: hve u had sex w jace? Im mad if u had
Jacob: why r u not talhinf
I sigh and call his number.
"You called! You still love me," he slurs when he answers. "Can you come get me?"
"Listen. I'm not doing this anymore. You're going to have to find another ride. Or just stay there. I'm sure Enderly won't mind."
"I don't want to stay here. Just come get me," he whines.
I don't respond. I'm so torn between standing up to him and being terrified that if I don't go get him, he will get behind the wheel and try to drive. "Jacob, I'm not coming to get you."
"But, why?" he complains. "You always come get me. I guess I'll just call dad and get him out of bed. He will come get me."
I don't let him make me feel guilty. "That's a good idea. He will probably be happy to get you."
"Really, really?!" he snaps, getting angry that I didn't give in. "You want me to call my dad and get him out of bed in the middle of the night to come pick me up? I'm not a child."
"Then quit acting like one!" I say as firmly as I can without yelling. "You're not mine to take care of anymore, Jacob. Figure it out on your own. Don't drive, call your dad."
"Whatever," he says as I hear the click of his phone hanging up. I immediately text Enderly to take his keys and not let him drive.
Enderly: Already done. Don't worry about him. I've got it covered Go to sleep.
Me: Thanks, friend. Talk later.
I turn my phone on silent and curl into a ball wondering what the repercussions of my actions are going to be tomorrow.
