Part Nineteen

I jumped up to my feet, my toes slipping into the mouth of Johnny Tran from year 9 for a moment, which made my skin crawl. He’d always been such a loyal admirer; I was going to miss him. I pulled my foot away from his eroding face, and jumped towards Mr Purple, who grabbed me and held me close to his body. It was weird, but I felt safe.

 

“Just so you know,” he said to me, “In case we, well you, die… I’m not actually in love with you.”

“Pardon?” I said, confused.

 How could he not be in love with me?

“It was my cover. Really I’m your guardian angel… I’ve been sent to protect your wellbeing, and for another reason, but that’s too much to get into right now.” 

“What?” I said, still confused.

“We’ll get into all that later, right now we have to get you out of here and away from Leonard.”

“Kk….” I smiled, and then I muttered a third K under my breath.

Stupid dick. How dare he not explain it to me then and there! Like he said, I could’ve died. I wanted to die knowing his whole secret, not only part of it. At that moment, I saw Leonard peer over the edge of the pit. His face was covered by shadows, but his smile was more than manic.

“Well, well,” he clicked his tongue in disapproval, “What have we here?”

I nearly screamed, but Mr Purple shook his head at me as if to say “don’t” and so I refrained.

“You little shit. I’m going to kill the fuck out of you….after I finish this last round of LOL” he said, walking away, back to his PC that was waiting for him, warm with the buzz of recently re-connected wifi.

When he was gone, and all we could here were his distant mumbles in response to the game that was unfolding in front of him, Mr Purple turned to me, his eyes wide.

“We have to go, now’s our chance!” he exclaimed.

“But… how?” I questioned, and before he had a chance to answer we were floating in the air, somehow.

 

Huh, I remember thinking to myself as we floated to the top of the pit, the perks of being an angel!
