She gave me the same explanation that Grandmother did. The prophecy spilled from her lips, like she had memorized it.
"I didn't want to tell you, baby. Mostly because I didn't want you to worry."
I shook my head, exhausted. "No mom, you were afraid. You didn't want me to know because, even if it's in the back of your mind, you thought that if I didn't know, maybe it wouldn't come true. You didn't take us away from a pack to see if we wouldn't meet our mates. You took us away from our family to hide me. Jasmine and I didn't deserve this. You were being selfish." I stepped away from her and drug my things upstairs to shut myself in my room. It proved to be a very long, hard night. I cried, thinking about the stressful week that didn't go how I wanted it to. Then I thought about this prophecy. I might die, or have to kill someone. And from what I hear about prophecies, it's one or another, no in between, no third option. It was suppose to be a romantic, stress-free vacation and I get the bomb of the century dropped on me. But I'm immortal, right? This shouldn't be a problem if this happens in a couple hundred years. Except it said I will be young, when this goes down. Maybe give me enough time to graduate high school. Go to college, have some kids. Get married.
My mother was so excited to hear I was engaged, but didn't seem to want to hear my unhappy news. She may be a teenager at heart, but that isn't always a good thing when a situation requires careful maturity, which she didn't portray. I rolled over in my bed, Devon's giant shirt getting caught and going up past my waist, revealing the rest of my sleepwear. Which of course was a thong. In perfect timing, Devon entered my bedroom, and stripped to his own underwear, before turning his attention to me. Now usually I would get flustered and adjust his shirt, but I was too upset to.
"Oh my sweet, sweet mate." Devon growled, maneuvering around the minefield that was my floor, before he pulled me onto my back and straddled me.
"Clearly, we both had a bad day. Time to make up for it." His lips fluttered across mine before the pressure hit me full force, and soon we were writhing on my king.
The next Monday, I felt apprehension. Macy and I had been spending a lot of time together and then I leave for spring break. The girl was going mad, or at least that's what she texted me. Sam however, was being weird. There was nothing I could do though, he had been doing this for weeks. That had something to do with Macy's clinginess, I believe, yet I wasn't prepared to get to the bottom of it. That's why I was not happy to part ways with Devon when we got to school, Sam was leaning against my locker. He clearly wanted to have a conversation I wasn't ready to have.
"Hey Kitty! Do you have time to talk?" His voice was a bit squeaky. "Sure." I kept it short, hoping he wasn't going to go on for days.
"Kaitlyn, do you love me?" Weird question.
"Of course I do." I opened my locker and grabbed my books for physics, and Sam closed the door for me.
"Well Kaitlyn...I love you. Like, I've been in love with you since seventh grade." He searched my eyes, begging for a good reaction to that news. He wasn't going to get one.
"I can't believe you! Macy's absolutely in love with you, and you've been leading her on! For five years!" I clutched my book to my chest, horrified at the situation. And I was the cause. Guilt crept up my throat, and I searched Sam for any indication of my old best friend. He wasn't there.
I turned from him, to find Devon, who was leaning against his own locker, texting one of his friends most likely. I agreed to go up with him, to his old town next weekend. Now we might need to take a heartbroken Macy. He more than likely heard that entire conversation, and I was about to go talk to him about it, when I was swung around. Sam pushed me into the locker, and attempted to lay one on me, but I ducked and slipped out of his reach. Devon was there in an instant, an arm against the lockers between Sam and I, protectively guarding his mate.
