Reality became non-existent. The sound of something screeching across the metal of our roof was hideously painful. Everything was pitch black and excruciatingly loud. Panic had me gripped, and I could only sit in shock. Another loud bang caused me to snap out of it, and then there was silence. The eerie thought passed my mind right as the scent hit me. Gasoline.
"Devon. Oh my god. Devon, baby! Wake up. Wolves heal really fast remember? Which is why I need you to wake up!" I shook him, and it was then I noticed the extreme pain in my shoulder. There was glass sticking from his shoulder, smaller shards glittering his neck and face. I was too much in shock to notice it at first.
I had to take a second to regain my thoughts. They were suddenly moving a million miles an hour. First I had to get Devon out and make sure we get away from the car. Then I need to make sure that those people are okay. Then I need to get this glass out of Devon. Okay, Kaitlyn. Go.
I couldn't open Devon's door it was too mangled. So instead, I opened mine, and started to pull him toward me and out my side. I managed to get him as far as the passenger seat, but was suddenly yanked away, and thrown on the ground. It must have been an EMT to come save Devon. It was hard to focus because the pain was making my head foggy. But then a scent that I vaguely recognized caught my attention and I was at full alert. Unable to retain Devon's pain anymore, I let it go with a wince. I felt bad, but he would understand why.
"There she is!" A tall man, with his hair tied back chuckled.
I felt fear grip me, and I did the only thing I could think of to buy me time. I ran.
The man was wearing a flannel and fit right into small town Washington. If someone found us, it would likely be easy for him to lie about his identity. His twisted grin kept flashing through my mind and I was terrified. He's the disgusting thing that the prophecy warned about, and now I need to face my fate...Once he catches me.
I ran, and I ran. So quickly that I could feel my feet on the bare asphalt start to bleed. So I dived into the forest, finally getting to that clearing that Devon had taken me to on our first date. The 'barely a meadow'. I spun around and shifted into my wolf form. Whether it was a conscious decision, I don't know. But it was a smart one.
It became apparent he was about to attack me, but as I shifted, I made it underneath his flying body before he could. I snapped at his ankle, and caught his jeans. The sound of ripping was the only thing I could hear for about two seconds, before I leapt up higher and actually bit his ankle. However, he was out of my grip before I managed to do significant damage.
The entire situation was surreal. Something that I couldn't put my finger on was making me anxious. Whatever it was, it was bad.
"Did you really think you can hurt the most powerful vampire in the world? You? A tiny little pup who doesn't know her whole prophecy? It's stupid, quite frankly. You. You're stupid. I can't wait to sink my teeth into your pretty little flesh." He was inching forward, and I was trying to figure out a way to run away again. Continuing to make fun of me, I was getting angry. Who did he think he was? I'm the chosen one! I'm here to destroy him! I started to prepare myself to attack.
There was a crack, and I noticed the vampire who had pushed me out of the way. Fresh blood was dripping down his chin, and I recognized the scent. I wanted to throw up. A whine escaped my lips before I could stop myself.
"That friend of yours was really helpful. He seemed really hurt by you, and willing to do anything to stop your boyfriend." The second one snarled.
