I woke up to my phone buzzing on the nightstand, as a first instinct I looked at Gabe who was still sleeping peacefully with his limbs spread all over the place.

I grabbed the offending device and answered the call, without bothering to check who was calling.

I grumbled a hoarse answer before hearing the soft voice on the other side "Hey, sorry, it's Camila, did I just wake you?"

I focused and it took me a second to put the pieces together.

I hummed in an affirmative response. "But don't worry, I had to get up sooner or later..." I trailed, yawning.

"I just called to know about the plans today, to work and stuff." She said and she was speaking so softly, giving me the impression she didn't want to bother me somehow.

I sighed and shot a look at my son.

"Listen, honesty, I'm not into working today; I was planning on taking the day off," I said, still trying to wake myself up.

"Oh... ok..." she sighed. "I'm sorry I disturbed you."

I felt like crap, she sounded so disappointed.

"No, it's ok, I mean, I'm sorry..." There was a moment of silence before I spoke again "I want to take Gabe to the lake. Would you like to join us? You can avoid the roommate and Gabe's crushing hard on you so..." I tried to make up for sounding like an asshole a few seconds before.

"You don't have to-" she started saying, but I interrupted her.

"I'd like you to come."

The line went silent again before I heard her feeble whisper "...Would you?"

I don't know if I was meant to hear that but I answered anyway. "Of course, I mean, it's nice to talk to somebody who's my age for a change." I chuckled.

"Alright then, text me with the plan when you're settled." I smiled and hummed in response.

"See you later then." She said and my stomach felt weird in anticipation. Her tone was light again, maybe she was smiling too.

"See ya." I hummed again before hanging up the phone.

We prepared a couple of bags with everything my son thought we needed. I made some sandwiches for the three of us, grabbed a couple of blankets, and something to drink and I hoped that the day would continue being unusually warm for the season.

Gabe put some toys in his bag and ran to grab the soccer ball.

"Mom, we need to put our swimsuits on!"

I shook my head. "It's too cold to take a bath, we'll just stay near the water, like a picnic."

He sighed and nodded looking outside of the window and went to grab his beanie.

I texted Camila telling her we were ready to pick her up and soon after we left the apartment.

We got close to her dorm and I was slightly nervous somebody I knew could see my son in the back seat of the car, but I didn't overthink it and looked for the brunette that was soon inside the car with a huge smile.

"Mooom, Camila is coming too!" My son shouted excitedly.

"Oh, I forgot to tell you... surprise!" I said, looking more at the girl sitting next to me than at my son who was almost jumping in his seat.

"Thanks mom!" He shouted again as if Camila's presence was a present for him; I chuckled.

"Hi," I said shyly, finally acknowledging the petite girl beside me.
