"Jade, what happened to you?"
"I asked you a question, Jerome. What. Are. You. Doing. Here."
"To drop Mitchell off with his younger brother. He lives here. Now what happened to you?"
"Papa was killed. I was captured. Humans are really stupid."
A human behind 'Jade' screamed at her to attack, and she did. But not the way they expected.
She stood on her hind legs, roared, and pounced backwards onto the humans. They screamed and scattered from their 'attack dog' as she rampaged through the men trying to control her.
One unfurled a whip, and she flinched. He struck her muzzle, and she cried. Jerome set Mitch on the grass, and charged out to assist his sister (So many s's oml). The humans once again scattered, as Jerome covered his sister while she recuperated from the whip strike. He growled and roared at all the humans that now surrounded him.
Jade shook off her initial shock and joined Jerome. She stood again on her hind legs, and so did he. They stood back-to-back in a circle of humans. An archer struck Jerome in the shoulder with an arrow, and the humans below took his legs out from under him. He crashed with only one good leg. As he went down, he cried a warning to Jade.
Suddenly without help, Jade growled, but was taken under control by humans at whip point. I hid next to Mitch, who had woken up from all the noise. Tears were in his eyes as he watched Jerome struggle with the humans. His expression hardened.
"HEY!" He yelled.
All the humans looked to Mitch, who now stood on the road.
"LEAVE THEM BE!"
"And why should we? They've killed our people!"
"When?"
"Too frequently to give a date."
"Meaning you're lying. I know the difference between a lie and truth. You're lying to save your own hide from the real dangers."
"Oh yeah?" The man chuckled, "and what's that?"
"Destruction. You're taking Jerome, the one who can control the baccas, to protect yourselves. Without Jerome, you'll lose more to baccas. They won't have a regulator, or an alpha. Good luck."
"Who?"
"Jerome, look at me."
Jerome lifted his head, pain is his eyes. He grumbled, and the men looked at him. I stepped onto the road, and stood behind Mitch. He reacted to the heat suddenly on the back of his legs, flinched, realized it was me, and relaxed.
"What you're doing to the Wilds is inescapable. It's horrible what you're doing to the creatures that live in the Wilds. As you take space, they lose space. Some of these creatures have lost family because of you."
He picked me up and held me.
"This creeper lost a limb, and mother because of you. You've destroyed his home, and he deserves much more than you ever will! Have you ever thought of all the lives you take? All the lives you take by cutting down trees, building with natural materials essential to a creature's life, all the herbicides you use that kills a creature's food source?! Anything?! Or are you so ignorant and selfish that you don't care?"
The village was silent. Jerome had an expression of extreme pride that Mitch was standing up for the Wilds against his own kind. Jade looked ashamed that she had been controlled so easily.
But just as quickly as the village had stopped moving, they continued to ravage Jerome and Jade, entangling them in netting and chains.
