Later that day, Hermione and Ruby decided to set out and watch the quidditch tryouts for the new team. Poor Harry was the student coach that year, and he wasn't the most experienced in being a leader. That being said, he still had Ginny to help him out.
The two girls sat on the bleachers and watched as they began their first practice match.
"What's with you and spearmint toothpaste all of the sudden?" Ruby asked.
"What do you mean?" Hermione asked.
"In potions this morning, it was like the moment spearmint came into your head, you went into a haze," she said.
"It's the most intoxicating potion for a reason," she replied, "What about you? What did you smell?"
Ruby froze for a minute, unsure of whether she should reply or not, "Pine wood," she replied simply.
"Pine wood?" Hermione asked.
"You like the smell of grass, I like the smell of pine trees," she replied. She figured it was best not mention Draco's scent was pine wood.
The match had begun, and both Ron and Cormac McLaggen were both going out for Keeper. Cormac was a very handsome man, but he wasn't the most well-behaved out there. He certainly wouldn't be Hermione's nor Ruby's first choice as a boyfriend.
A row down, Ruby noticed Lavender Brown fidgeting in her seat. She kept whispering to herself and clamping her hands together. The whole time, her gaze was fixated on Ron.
Ginny was a natural at quidditch, she flew with grace on her broom with the ball in hand, ducking past her opponents and swerving around the support pillars. She sent two chasers flying off their brooms, and tried to throw the ball into Cormac's goal hoop. He threw back every quaffle that was thrown his way. Meanwhile, Ron was improvising his defensive techniques. When the quaffle came barrelling his way, he kicked it back. Sometimes he bumped it back with his chest, and other times he knocked it back with his own head. You had to give him credit for being resourceful.
One throw of the quaffle made him lose his balance, and he nearly fell off his broom. Everybody watched in anticipation while he struggled to get himself together, dangling in the air like a thread as his broomstick floated in the air. It took a few tries, but he was able to saddle himself back onto the broom.
Two chasers were making opposite ways to Ron and Cormac. Cormac was ready for anything, and he had a smug smirk on his face as the chaser approached. But just as he threw the quaffle, Ruby heard Hermione whisper under her breath.
"Confundus!" Cormac was suddenly thrown to the left, leaving an easy pathway for the quaffle to back into the goal hoop. He looked like a deer in the headlights at what had just happened.
"I saw that," Ruby whispered to Hermione.
"Sh!" she shushed her with a giggle.
The second chaser approached Ron as rapid speed and hurled the quaffle his way. Ron dropped upside down and hung in the air, just as the quaffle bounced off his helmet and onto the field. Everybody roared with cheer, especially Lavender Brown, who became quite excited at Ron's victory.
He was the new Gryffindor Keeper.

That night, everybody had decided to relax in the Gryffindor common room, including Ruby. She sat on the edge of the couch as she and Hermione compared their homework answers for divinations. Ron was chilled, probably the most calm Ruby had ever seen him, he was going off about his win at the tryouts today. And as for Harry, he was skimming through his new potions books, which apparently had been marked up with cheat notes from its previous owner.
"I have to admit I thought I was going to miss that last one. I hope Cormac's not taking it too hard," Ron said, "He's got a bit of a thing for you, Hermione. Cormac," he said. Hermione looked at him, then rolled her eyes.
"He's vile," she replied.
"And vulgar," Ruby added.
"Yeah. You with Cormac would be like Ruby dating Malfoy," Ron chuckled. Ruby stopped for a moment at his words, then nodded quickly.
"Yep," she replied quickly.
"Have you ever heard of the spell: Sectumsempra?" Harry asked, showing them a page out of his book.
"No," Ron replied.
"Sounds intriguing, what's it do?" Ruby asked.
"No idea," Harry replied.
"If you had a shred of self-respect, you'd hand that book in," Hermione told him.
"Not bloody likely. He's top of the class. He's even better than you, Hermione," Ron said.
"Slughorn thinks he's a genius," Ruby said. Hermione put down her homework and glared at them.
"What?" they asked.
"I'd like to know whose that book was," Hermione said as she got up, "Let's have a look, shall we?"
"No," Harry stood up and backed away from her, clutching the book as tightly as possible.
"Why not?" Hermione asked.
"The binding's fragile," he replied. Hermione scoffed.
"The binding is fragile?" she asked, not believing him for a moment.
"Yeah," Ginny then stood up and took the book from him, then began to skim through it.
"Who's the half-blood prince?" she asked.
"Who?" Hermione asked.
"That's what it says right here: this book is property of the half-blood prince," she read out.
"Ooh! Not even 24-hours in, and we got a mystery on our hands!" Ruby exclaimed happily. Ginny threw the book back to Harry, who gladly took it back to his room wit him.
"You get excited over the whackiest of things," Ron told Ruby.
"Well, your brothers aren't here anymore, so somebody has to keep up the manic mania around here,"
"Who better than Ravenweirdo herself?" Ron muttered. Ruby kicked his shin, "Ow!"
"I heard that, Weasley,"
