Harry and Ruby had discussed the problem between their friends, and decided to talk to the other. Ruby was unlucky enough to get to talk to Ron, and about all things – Lavender Brown.
"I can't help it if she's got her knickers in a twist. What Lav and I have, well, let's just say, there's no stopping it," the two of them were walking down the hall to their next class, " It's chemical. Will it last? Who knows? Point is I'm a free agent," he said.
"You lost me after 'chemical'," Ruby said.
"I understand you're still a little loopy from your curse, but even you have to understand electricity when you see it," he said.
"Fortunately, I've never had the pleasure," she said, "Look, I'm happy that somebody actually thinks you're a decent boyfriend, but Lavender isn't exactly all there, you must admit,"
"What does that mean?" Ron asked.
"Well, there's the fact that she looks at you as if you're some sort of prince instead of a peasant," she said.
"You're starting to sound like the Slytherins," he said.
"My point is that you could do better then a girl who wears stupid scarves around her hair and her voice sounds like a mouse with the flu," she replied.
"That's quite mean," he said.
"Have you met me?" she replied. As they turned the corner, Ruby saw Draco and the Tweedles coming their way.
"Quick, pretend you're talking to me," she told Ron.
"...But I am talking to you," he said.
"Good! Just like that," she said. Ron was confused, but proceeded in a menial conversation with Ruby, not noticing they passed the Slytherin prince and his followers.
"Anyway, there's a party going on this week. Are you going?" he asked her.
"What's the party for?" she asked. Ron chewed on his lip for ideas.
"...Just a get-together with friends. Most of the houses are going, no Slytherins allowed," he replied.
"Doesn't sound good right now," she replied.
"You still feeling off?" he asked.
"Not just me, my magic. I blew up a beetle in charms class this morning," she replied.
"How do you blow up a beetle?" he asked.
"That's what I was thinking. My magic is just whacked," she replied.
"Well, don't worry. A party is sure to brighten your spirits," he said.
"I'm telling you, when I find the bloke who cursed me, I'm going to hang him by his underpants at the astronomy tower, for all to witness,"
As they walked away, Draco stopped dead as he listened in on their conversation. He felt the insatiable pang of guilt bubble in his chest, hearing Ruby's words over and over again.

By the end of the week, Ruby still felt like a mess, with sudden head rushes and dizzy spells occurring at the most inopportune times. That, and her magic was completely out of sorts. She was not in the mood for a party. Especially since today was her sixteenth birthday. All she wanted to do was relax.
But Cho pulled her off her bed and forced her to change. She made her wear red dress and a pair of boots, then she pulled her through the castle.
