I picked Hazel up from her house and we set out for the library. I needed to get a book anyway for a report in history. Might as well make this trip productive. Who knows what Hazel was going to complain about now?

“Hey.” She greeted me with a smile when she got in. I smiled warmly back to her and pulled out.

“Hi.” I said cheerfully as I drove. “While we’re at the library I’m gonna get a book for my history report. That ok?” I asked, having no idea how long we’d be there. Hazel shrugged.

“I don’t care. I just wanna talk to you…” she trailed off looking nervously out the window as I pulled into the library parking lot.

Our library was a pretty little place. It’s got huge windows on the first and second floors so when you sit in the chairs you can look out the window. The library is rather big and it holds a lot of books. I normally only come here for quiet or to do homework.

“Why do you seem so shifty?” I asked her and watched her get out, shutting my own door. The birds tweeted in the distance and I could hear the roar of cars behind us.

Hazel stared at me, a little bit of surprise on her face. “I’m shifty? Really…” she said looking out past me into the sea of people. “I don’t mean to be.” She said looking like she had something to hide. Maybe she did. That had my mind going…

“Right.” I mumbled and headed to the entrance of the library, Hazel on my tail. “So what’d you want to talk to me about?” I asked her walking through all the shelves of books. We sat in squashy chairs by a huge window that looked out onto the street.

“Oh, well a couple of things really. What do you want first? The good news or the bad news?” she asked me leaning back and looking around the quiet library.

“How about the good news…” I trailed off. Normally I’d say bad news that way I’d end with good, but I just really needed to hear something good. Hazel smiled and looked at me.

“I have a boyfriend.” She said sounding giddy when she told me. A slow smile spread across my lips.

“Really?” I asked, intrigued. She’d had a couple of boyfriends before. The longest only lasted about a month. Hazel nodded, a cute little smile on her face. She pulled her phone out and started to look for a picture she’d taken of him.

“I’m so excited for you!” I said in a whispered excited voice. Hazel laughed and showed me a picture of her boyfriend.

“He’s really nice and sweet to me, a real gentlemen. His name is Jason.” She said.

He had dark, short, black hair and bright blue eyes. When I glanced up at Hazel I realized they kind of matched hers. He seemed about a year older, or maybe he was one of those people who had an extra year of school when they were little.

“He’s a good pick.” I said with a sly smile. We both burst into a fit of giggles, which got us some glares and mean looks from people in the library.

“Sorry!” I whispered a little loudly so they could hear me, though they probably didn’t want to. I turned and smiled at Hazel as she put her phone away.
