"That was so stupid! He can't even sing!" Devan said.
"Yeah, he sounds really bad! And he is so stupid! Shawn thinks he is so awesome but he is just an idiot with a bad voice." Another boy said. Jess felt her heart beat rise and her temper explode. She ran over to the boys.
"Hey idiots! Stop talking like that! Shawn never did anything to you! Back off!" She screamed in their faces.
They looked surprised then snapped back at her "Aww, look. Baby is protecting her little friend! That just makes you even more of an idiot! He only let you sing with him to make him look like a good guy!"
Jess balled her fists. No one talked about Shawn badly without having to deal with her.
"For your information, that is the opposite of true! Shawn did not let me sing with him to make himself good! He is my BOYFRIEND, dumbos! Say another bad thing about him and my fist will end up in a place where the sun don't shine! Come on! I dare you!" Jess started looking scary. Her face had turned red with anger and her eyebrows were furrowed. The boys took a small step back, giving her some space.
"Thank you!" Jess yelled sarcastically at them. She strutted past them, continuing to walk backstage. She ran up the small set of stairs and John, the security guard let her past. She saw Shawn drinking water and walked to him.
"Heyyyyyyy! You did amazing!!" She gave him a big hug. He was sitting down, so they were around the same height.
"Thanks! You did great too! I told you that your singing was awesome!" Shawn smiled and leaned in to kiss Jess. She quickly looked around making sure no one was watching then kissed him back. Not that she was against kissing him in public, but she didn't want any campers and councilors to see her if she did. They might think she was a bad influence then.
"Are you hungry? My lunch period is now, so we can grab a bite to eat." Jess asked Shawn.
"Yeah, I'll eat. I am always hungry. Let me go get my phone and I will meet you outside." Jess smiled and walked out of backstage. Shawn ran to get his phone from his guitar bag and then walked back to the exit. But before he could get out, some boys walked past talking. He would have ignored them but he heard a name said, so he had to listen.
"She in so annoying, thinking that she can get in our faces." One boy said. Another replied "Yeah, Jess should back off, that idiot. She will pay for that! It's like, get lost b****."
Shawn came out of hiding when he heard that and started yelling at the boys.
"Hey, do you boys have girlfriends?" He asked harshly. They looked at him blankly. Only one boy raised his hand.
"I do." He said.
"Then you know that guys don't like it when someone talks badly about their girlfriend. So stop talking about Jess like that!" Shawn snarled at them, trying not to explode and rip their faces off. The boys turned around and walked away. Shawn saw one of them role their eyes. It took all of his strength not to punch him square in the nose.
Shawn shook off his anger and loosened up so when he saw Jess, she did not notice his tenseness. He walked out of backstage and to her. She smiled kindly. He smiled back, hiding his left over fury.
"Shawn, what is wrong?" Dang, Shawn thought. Jess caught him.
"Um, nothing." He played it cool.
"Somethings up. What happened?" She could always tell when something was bothering him. He was like a open book, at least to her.
Shawn did not want to tell her but they never kept secrets from each other.
"Ok, some boys were talking badly about you. So I taught them a lesson."
"Did you hurt them?!" Jess said alarmed.
"No! I just yelled at them!"
Jess sighed in relief. "Good. Yeah, I don't care. They were probably the same boys who were talking bad about you so I set them straight." Shawn felt his heart do a small jump because it felt nice knowing that Jess was sticking up for him. Jess felt the same way.
"Ok, thanks for that. I don't like them, just for future reference." Jess and Shawn laughed.
"Let's get some food." Jess said and grabbed Shawn's hand, linking it with hers.
"I like that idea." The two of them set off for the mess hall, hearts beating together as one.
