"Re-rewind Friday night never forget this. How you let me go. No more lies, I'll be fine, didn't know where we were heading. And now Im gonna say pretty please forgive me. Yeah. Hurt you once, hurt me twice, now I regret it. Now I'm all alone, yeah. Turns out that no one can replace you. Your permanent I can't erase you. You let me remember you. Once more kiss is all it takes. You left me with the memories and the aftertaste!" Shawn sang out starting his second song, once again changing the words. Jess felt the air being whipped out of her. Aftertaste was her favorite song of his. And he knew that. Now he was using it to tell her how sorry he was. Out of every song in the world, he chose this one because of its meaning to her. Maybe she was wrong about Shawn. Maybe he really was telling the truth. Maybe, he really loved her. Shawn finished the song only moments after he began and was out of breath. Neighbors were now clearly listening.
"Jess! I love you! I love you! I love you! Forgive me and we can all go back to what we were before. Before Alli interrupted and screwed things up! Please! I...I need you because without you...I'm lost." Shawn finally looked around at the house and found Jess looking through her hidden window. He looked sadly into her eyes, his brown ones melting her heart. He looked so torn, so out of place. But he could say the same about her.
Jess felt almost hypnotized by him and silently walked to the door. Then she opened it, the slightest bit. Immediately she stepped back a few steps to put distance between them. Shawn stepped in and put his guitar down.
Giving Maddy a look, Jess motioned for her to go to Shawn. Maddy knew that look and most definitely what it meant. She walked to Shawn, putting two fingers on the bottom of his right wrist and on the other hand, two fingers on his neck. He freezed, slightly scared of what Maddy was doing. He knew though that if he moved, it would not be good.
"Shawn." Jess started once Maddy was in position. Jaime went to Shawn's other side in case he tried to break away. "When I walked in, I saw you and Alli kissing. Did you kiss her and or did she kiss you?"
"She kissed me. I never went to get anywhere near her in that way. She just, did it."
"Ok...Did you enjoy the kiss?" Jess held her breath after she said it.
"No. The only person I want to kiss is you. She didn't feel right, not like you do." Shawn tightened when Maddy pressed harder on his skin.
"Here's the question that I just need to ask. Did you and would you ever cheat on me for someone else?" Jess didn't want to ask anymore questions. It was too hard on her heart.
"I did not cheat on you and no, I would never! I told you that Jess. I love you and everyone else are just people that I care about in a different way. Not the way I care about you. You are my sunshine, my source of happiness, part of my heart. No one can replace you. NO ONE." Shawn emphasized the no one.
"Ok." Jess said, quietly. "Maddy?"
"As much as I don't want to say it, he is telling the truth. All of it. True."
Jess felt her heart flutter. Maddy was never wrong when it came to checking people's pulses to see if they were lying. Never.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maddy let go of Shawn and he felt better. Then she told Jess he wasn't lying. But the problem was that Shawn could not tell if Jess was happy about that or not.
"Jess." He began, taking a deep breath and closing eyes for a second. He opened them. But Jess was no longer there. He sighed and turned around, going to walk out the door. He made a big mistake and Jess was not going to forgive. At least he tried.
His hand was practically on the doorknob when he felt a hand on his shoulder and soft lips touching his. Shawn immediately let go of the knob and gently gripped Jess's head, leaning down. She went on her tippy toes and put her hands on his abdomen. Shawn had feared they had had their last kiss. But that fear was gone now that their mouths touches. A tear slipped out of his eye, touching his cheek as well as Jess's. She took one hand off him and wiped it a way, not moving her lips even a millimeter away from his. Shawn could taste the raspberry Chapstick on her lips. He had actually thought he would never taste it again. After a few moments, the two teenagers broke away from each other, breathing fresh air. Maddy and Jaime just stood still watching them as if they were in the latest romance movie. They found it quiet entertaining, for they never saw anyone kiss like that in person. Especially their best friend and THE Shawn Mendes.
"You believe me." Shawn whispered.
"Yeah, I do. And Maddy checked your pulse and she is never wrong." Jess said with her first real smile since last night.
"I love you cupc-Jess."
"You can call me cupcake. It's ok...muffin."
"MUFFCAKE IS STILL ALIVE!!" Maddy screamed at the top of her lungs. Shawn and Jess alarmingly looked at her. Then she blushed. "Sorry, sorry. Didn't mean to ruin the moment."
The couple looked at each other again.
"Jess, let me tell you exactly what happened. No more lies, no more secrets, no more misunderstandings." Shawn said, interlocking his fingers with Jess's. And then there was once again a Mrs. Mendes in the world.
