Jess walked to the kitchen and grabbed one of those little boxes of cereal. She hopped on her bike and started riding, pouring the fruit loops into her mouth at every corner she had to stop at. Shawn had left a few minutes before, sneaking out of her window the way he came in. And as far as Jess knew, her mother had no idea anything happened. Not that anything had happened, for the two of them just slept, no kissing or what not. Jess tried to talk about the moment they had had yesterday with him, but she was too afraid to. She was actually really scared of what he was going to say, as lame as that sounds.
Slowing down, Jess parked her bike by a bench and walked to the little public swing set. It was pretty hidden, for trees and shrubs grew around it, blocking people from viewing it. She had only found it a few months ago and liked to go on it for peace and quiet. To think. Mostly about life and what her future held. She sat down on one of the swings, swinging back and forth. Jess put her ear buds in her ears and cleared her mind. She then realized that she didn't notice how much she needed alone time until she actually got some. The wind around her was mild and relaxing. But Jess was not relaxed.
She was actually freaking out. She had posted a video on Instagram, youtube, snapchat, and vine saying the date and time of her concert, telling people where to come and how much money they needed to get in. Yeah, she got the word out, but would people come? If they do, what should she sing? How should she sing it? Questions filled the air around Jess, making her head explode. She was so excited but so frightened at the same time.
As songs played, Jess wrote down all of her favorites and the one's she knew the best. Those were going to be the one's she sung at her performance. An hour later, she rode back home. It was going to be a long three days.
Three Days Later
Looking at the stage from the audience was something Jess did a million times in her life. From Shawn's concerts to her mothers favorite old people bands, she watched it all. But being on the stage and looking at the audience was a whole different feeling. Jess stood there and looked at the empty bleachers, as one of Shawn's workers put on the little ear piece Shawn let her borrow for the concert. In less than ten minutes, people would be coming in, sitting down to see HER preform. It was all so much. Apparently, a few of them were already lining up outside. Jess had a bunch of her friends coming, like Jaime, Maddy, Jasmine, Emily, and Bella. Even Shae and Isabella, her camp friends, were coming too. Then there were the few fans who direct messaged her on Instagram telling her they were coming or commented it on youtube.
"Hey, you are going to do great. I know you will." Jess's mom said as she walked over.
"Thanks, I'm just really nervous."
"Its ok to be nervous. Just be confident, try your best and most importantly, have fun. That is all I want to see from you and what all of your fans want too." She patted her back and walked away to talk with the worker who finished putting the ear piece in. Then Shawn walked out from behind stage with John, his bodyguard who was going to be her's for the day and let people in. John walked to the door and slipped out. He was going to give a signal when he was letting people take their seats. Jess sat at the edge of the stage, letting her feat dangle over. The stage was very short and her tiny legs were able to reach the ground. Shawn sat next to her and held her hand. Jess smiled weakly, then started breathing heavily.
"Shawn, I don't know if I can do this. I don't think I can. I don't think I can! I don't think I c-"
"Jess, you will be fine! You will actually do AMAZING! I know you will." he said reassuringly.
"How do you know?"
"Because you were able to get up there and sing at camp, so you can do it again now. Just because it is your concert this time, does't mean anything. And you always do great in everything you do. Jess, when I grow up I want to be like YOU!" Shawn poked Jess lightly in the arm. Jess laughed and sniffled, holding in a tear.
"What if people don't like me? What is they think I am a bad singer or a bad person?"
"Cupcake, you are the biggest hearted person I know and care about everyone you meet. AND, you are the best-voiced person I know too. So don't even say that." Shawn would have continued, but John gave the signal meaning they had to go back stage. The two kids stood up and walked behind the curtain.
Owen came up to Jess and wished her good luck, then walked into the theater room to take a seat. Even he wanted to watch. Jess could hear people entering. Some voices she recognized, but many she never heard before. They were all excited. She could here one voice, high pitched and young saying "I can't believe I am actually going to see THE JESS MESSI in PERSON!! Mommy, maybe I will even be able to meet her!" An older voice replied to the little one "Maybe Katie, maybe." Jess felt her heart melt, that some little girl wanted to meet her and was this excited to just see her sing.
Minutes later, John came backstage and said that no one else was coming. They were all seated and the concert could begin. Jess's mother gave her a quick back rub and walked out to take her seat. Shawn squeezed her hand.
"Good luck! Love you!" he said. Shawn hesitated, as if he was going to do something, but then let go of her hand and turned around. But after a step or two he turned around and speedily walked back to Jess. He held her head and pressed his lips to hers. Then he let go, smiled lightly and walked away. Jess closed her eyes and took a deep breath. One of the two backstage people dimmed the lights and Jess could hear the crowd screaming. She opened her eyes and put her guitar strap over her shoulder.
Putting a confident smile on her face, Jess walked out onto the stage.
