Hopefully
You’ll be fine without me by your side
Hopefully, I will too
Her weak voice let out a small curse as she felt her tears drenching down her fingers again. Burying her face in her hands, she cried helplessly.
What else was she supposed to do?
Waking up and finding out the only person who had been by her side for days—gone?
And the worst part was—she didn’t even know why she was crying.
She knew every corner of Namiri Island. She knew the best spot to stand and watch the glorious sun drown back to his slumber—she knew the beaches where stepping on the sand felt like floating on flurry coffee clouds. So why should she bother that Nate left her without a reason?
Her heart sank at the answer that appeared in her head—the answer that blurred all the beauty of the island she called home, the answer that even made her forget about finding Devon.
She was falling for Nate…

“I’m really sorry to drag you down this path again.”
Nate stared blankly at the older woman in front of him, the chamomile tea in his hands fuzzing with blandness as he sipped it into his mouth. He sighed. “It’s not your fault, Mom—“
“Drop it,” the older woman sighed. “I’m really sorry I forced you to come. I swear, I don’t know Ella would turn out this…”
“It’s fine,” Nate placed his teacup back on the table. He was back in town—back in the café where he first saw Dianne and dared himself to talk to her. Who knew it only took three weeks for a stranger to break his walls?
“Are you coming back—to—“
“Namiri Island. My article isn’t finished yet. I have a lot to catch up,” he shrugged. “But I really want to stay here, with you—and Ella…”
“I know you, Nate. I’ve known you since you stopped Ella from crying at our Christmas party years ago. Ah—those days,” Ella’s mother looked through the window, as if she was letting herself out of the present troubles they were dwelling in. “You wouldn’t look this broken if going back to that island wasn’t that much important to you. Talk to me.”
“There’s… this girl,” Nate finally opened up to the woman he always treated as his mother. His lips gave up to the warmth that rose from his heart, making him smile slightly. There were only two words that best describe her—“I met her here. She spent all day—sitting alone in the corner, tearing paper. She’s an ambitious writer. She’s a stranger in this town, but she knows everything about Namiri—and I need to write an article about that place…”
“So you both acted like crazy lovers and had your sweet escape there, like nobody’s watching?” Ella’s mother laughed. “Nate—you love her.”
Nate hoped his racing heartbeat could give him some assurance.
“You think I do?”
Times have changed, now I don’t even know myself
Do I even want to?
