Twice

Nate found himself awoke on an empty bed.

He blinked as the morning sun greeted him through the curtainless window, smiling to himself as he remembered their kiss last night—

Well, the kiss and everything that followed.

He didn’t know how long it lasted. All he remembered was falling asleep with Dianne tucked in his arms, just the way he wanted her to be.

“Good morning, I was just over to Aunt Gifta’s for these.” The next second, Dianne entered the room with hands full of paper bags.

“Wow! Let me help you with that,” Nate quickly rose from the bed and carried the groceries to the kitchen. “God bless that woman. She buys all of this for you?”

“Well, she included them in my monthly charge, but I bet she gives a lot of discount too,” Dianne said. “She said that since you’re living here too, we will need more food, and she said something about you needing more energy for working at night which I didn’t really get since you only edit my poems during the day.”

“You—are so…” Nate couldn’t contain himself and hugged Dianne as he laughed. He never believed he really kissed such a naïve girl last night so easily.

“What? At least I told her we’re not—going too far,” Dianne frowned and crossed her hands below her chest.

“Sure,” Nate whistled as he unpacked the groceries. “And I’m sorry, but I’m cooking breakfast today. It’s about time that I show you my mega cooking skills.”

“Liar,” Dianne laughed, walking to the bathroom. “I really hope you’ll make something good so last night won’t be our first and last kiss.”

Nate stopped beating some eggs in a bowl and pulled Dianne back into her arms, holding her from behind. He lowered his head and left a peck on her lips before she could realize it, saying, “Now at least we’ve kissed twice.”
