The sleepy-eyed janitor had just finished mopping the lobby when a voice urged him to turn around.
"Hey! Devon, boy! Up so early?" he greeted in his hoarse voice. Devon replied with a weak smile-he, too, was sleepy. It was just a few minutes before six. The sun had just risen fully in the morning sky, with the clouds forming a pastel pink blush around its glow. It was indeed beautiful, but Devon longed to see the sky freely without obstructions from these tall buildings surrounding him.
"I need to check out. Today," Devon said at the motel receptionist, who looked at him in confusion.
"I thought you would stay here longer," the receptionist replied. Realizing that Devon would tell him nothing more, he shrugged and wrote a check-out receipt. "Thank you for your stay. You bring a girl with you yesterday night, eh?"
"Mm-hm. That's my sister," Devon said gleefully, all the weariness in him seemed to have been lifted away from his shoulders. "We just met up last night. I gotta bring her somewhere-better."
"You're going home?" the receptionist questioned. Devon needn't tell him, he knew somebody like Devon must not belong to that town.
"We'll see about that," Devon said honestly.
It had been years. He never knew what Dianne had been through when she was away from him, in this town. How did she survive? How much help did Lucio give her? Would she be willing to come back to Namiri?
The town seemed so splendid. Lucio seemed like a really nice guy.
And suddenly, Devon felt so small.
