Chapter 8
TAYLOR'S P. O. V.
I could tell Zach was trying his hardest to ignore us, but Bentley made that quite hard. Zach was turned talking to Xavier about baseball nonsense, and Bentley looked interested.
"You guys play baseball?" He asked. I gave him a 'duh' look, which he didn't pick up on.
"Bentley, this is the school team." I said, motioning around us.
He looked at me with awe. I rolled my eyes.
"This is Zach the pitcher," I pointed to Zach, "That's Blake, the catcher" I pointed across the table, "and Ricky, he plays third, Mark, he plays short stop, Xavier plays second, Brandon plays first, and Chase, Nick, and Michael are the outfield." I said, pointing to every one that either sat at this table or the table to our left.
"Wait, why do you sit here then?" He asked, face full of confusion.
"Well, I like to sit with my best friend," and at perfect timing, Lauren sat down next to Blake, giving him a kiss, "but she always sits with Blake, and Blake sits here." As an afterthought, I added "Plus, Zach is like my other best friend, so I guess he's okay too." I smirked, and nudged Zach with my hip. I could see a smile form on his lips.
"So there's a game next Saturday?"
"Yeah the chamionship. Well, not a real chamionship. It's more like the final game of the fall season. They start again in April, and somewhere in June is the real championship, I think." I shrugged.
"Are you going to the game?" He asked.
"Uh, I don't know." I said, purposely hesitating, knowing Zach can hear me.
"Well maybe you can go with m-"
"Actually," said Zach's voice beside me. His arm circled my waist and pulled me closer to him. Finally he does something. "She's gonna be in the stands wearing my jersey, cheering nonstop for me." He leaned in to kiss my cheek, but he stopped himself. I guess he remembered he's supposed to be mad at me?
"Okay so since you're going do you wanna-" started Bentley.
"And before the game, she's coming to the warm-ups." Interrupted Zach.
"No I'm not." I said facing Zach's face, which was pretty close may I add, with no intention of going an hour early to see them stretch and do drills.
"Yeah you are. Lauren's going." He said, his arm still around me.
"So? How much more of me do you need?" I smirked and pryed his arm off of my waist. I turned back to Bentley. "You were saying?"
At his point, Bentley's face was red from anger or embarrassment, I'll never know. "I was wondering if you wanna come to the game with me." He breathed out.
Zach spit out his Gatorade beside me.
I froze. What do I say? I really don't see him with me. As I said before, I can see us as friends, if that, but nothing more. Maybe he just wants to hang out at the game? That's an other thing, I actually watch Zach's baseball games, I don't really socialize. I don't want to make him feel left out, though. He is new, so he probably doesn't have many friends yet. But still. Maybe I'm just overthinking this.
"I- uh, actually I am going to the warm-ups." I decided, "So I can't go with you to the game but I'll see you at the game?" I said half-asked.
He nodded vigorously, his cheeks still tinted pink. "Yeah, I- Yeah. That's fine." He smiled, and got up to throw away his trash. When he was out of view, I turned in my seat to face a Zach bent over, holding his stomach, and coughing. I awkwardly patted his back until he was done with his coughing spasm.
