Glowing Eyes

the next day, mark left. he left early in the morning, way before my new nurse was supposed to show up; his wife started having closer contractions. I watched him walk out of the cell through the small slit window in the door.

you see, tyler? now your precious marc is leaving you. no wonder why, you're a suicidal head case tyler. no one needs you, no one wants you. end it. fear will win, ty.

fear.

will.

win.

"no." I muttered. he's back.

oh, tyler, keep fooling yourself. but just know i'm telling you the truth. you're not wanted here-

"stop it."

-or anywhere. not in your own family, not by anyone who works in this hospital. that's why all the other nurses and doctors try to steer clear from you-

"leave me alone." tears were welling up in my eyes.

-because they don't want you. i'm surprised marc lasted this long. he was just pretending to like you, tyler. he had no choice. it was his job-

"stop."

-and now, you know what's gonna happen? you're gonna be put in a smaller cell with just you, me and 4 brick walls for you to bash your head into for when you've finally listened to me.

"no, I won't." a few tears dripped to my lap, both my hands on the side of my head; covering my ears and trying to get blurry to shush.

TYLER. listen to me. no one will miss you. so just do it. die. that's the only way to get me to stop, right? so do it.

I started crying. sobbing. I was hitting my head with my hands curled up in fists.

"STOP IT. NO, I WON'T LISTEN TO YOU. NO."

I heard the sound of my door click open. I heard the sirens going off in the hall, calling for more nurses and to have all patients locked in their rooms.

tyler, they're here. they're trying to keep you alive. don't stay alive. fear will win, tyler. peace will lose. DON'T FIGHT THIS FEELING TYLER. DIE.

JUST.

DIE.

I couldn't hear the voices of the dozen of nurses. I could only hear blurry repeating the same lines: fear will win, peace will lose.

the soft faces of the nurses I once knew transformed into featureless black masks with red glowing eyes.

I couldn't stop screaming. I kicked and scratched and tried my hardest to break free from the monsters that held me tight in their black, dripping arms. I could feel the substance around my neck an all over my hands. I felt sharp pains in my arm and then suddenly, out of nowhere, I was paralyzed. I couldn't feel or say anything, but I could still think and see. I could faintly hear the voices still, until those faded to whispers.

Fear will win, peace will lose.

No. Peace will win. Fear will lose.

Everything went black.
