We were driving home from work late one day. It had been a week since Christmas and I was now about 3 months pregnant. I had a small bump. It was more noticeable now.
It was dark and rainy. I was dropped with tiredness. I hadn't been sleeping lately. Little Sammy or Haley had learned that he/she was able to move and had picked night time to move a lot.
"Mel, you need sleep." Spencer said. "You could barely stay awake all day. Lack of sleep is bad for you and for the baby."
I chuckled.
"I didn't know you were that kind of doctor." I said. Spencer laughed.
"Try to sleep tonight, okay?" he said.
"I'll try, Spencer, but it's not easy." I said. I noticed him smile. "Hey! You try sleeping when there's another human inside you moving around."
"I can't. I'm a boy."
We both laughed at this. Everything that happened next seemed to happen in slow motion.
We came up to the lights. Ours was green. Spencer went to turn. I heard the screech of tires. I turned to look out Spencer's window to see a car driving towards us.
"Look out!" I screeched.
Spencer tried to swerve out of the way, but the car hit us before he could. It hit his side. My head hit off the window and I was a bit dilerious.
I remember blacking out and I woke up to the sound of some one yelling and knocking. I looked up to see a man knocking on the window. He had blood racing down his face.
"Are you okay?!" I heard him yell.
I nodded, but it hurt my head. I put my hand on my head in pain. I looked over at Spencer. He had his head on the steering wheel and his eyes were closed. I quickly sat up as the event replayed in my head.
"Spencer?" I whispered. No response.
"Spencer." I said, a bit louder. Nothing. I shook him. He didn't respond.
"Spencer? Reiders, please! Wake up! Please, wake up! Tell me you're okay, please. Please, Spencer." I shook him violently, but he still didn't wake up.
Anger boiled and I fierce fully opened the door, nearly hitting the man. He backed up in surprise.
"Were you driving that car?!" I snapped, pointing to the car that hit us. He nodded, fear in his eyes. "I hope you know I can arrest you! I am an FBI agent and so is he!"
I pointed to Spencer.
"Listen, I'm sorry. I had no one to drive me home-"
"Are you drunk?!" I snapped. I could smell the alcohol on his breath. He nodded and hung his head. "You're under arrest."
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and quickly dialed Uncle Aaron's number. It rang three times before he finally answered.
"Hello, Aaron Hotchner." he said.
"Uncle Aaron? I need you right now." I said.
"Mel? What's wrong?"
I felt the tears slipping down my face as I looked back at Spencer's body. I mentally prayed that he was okay. I couldn't lose him.
"A drunk driver hit us." I replied.
"Mel, are you okay?!"
"I'm fine. I hit my head, but I'm okay now. It's Spencer. He's not waking up." my voice began to shake. "Uncle Aaron, I really need you guys. Please get the team and ambulance please. I don't know if he's okay."
"We'll be there as soon as we can. Where are you Mel?"
I told him where the accident was and he hung up. The man who did it was standing by his car again. He was pacing and muttering to himself.
"You!" I yelled. "Get over here right now!"
He obeyed me without any questions.
"What's your name?" I asked.
"C-Christian." he replied.
"Christian what?" I spat.
"Christian Marshall. Everyone calls me Chris."
"Well, Chris Marshall, you're under arrest for driving impaired. The rest of the FBI team are on their way. Turn around right now."
He turned around. I brought his hands together behind his back and cuffed him using the cuffs I had in the car whenever I needed them.
"I'm so sorry." he said. "I never meant for any of this to happen. I had no way home and I couldn't afford a taxi. I thought I could drive home."
"No excuses. You were impaired and you drove." I snapped.
The rest of the team and the ambulance got there quickly. JJ and Penelope quickly hugged me when they got there. I watched as they moved Chris' car and got Spencer out and onto a gurney. I buried my head in JJ's shoulder and cried.
"It's okay, Mel. Reid has been through much worst then this. He'll pull though." said Penelope as she and JJ tried to calm me down.
"Melanie Reid?"
I looked up at a woman from the ambulance.
"Y-yes." I said.
"Would you mind if we take you with us? We want to check and make sure everything's okay where you're expecting." she said.
"Can I ride with Spencer?"
The woman gave me a sympathetic look.
"Yes, you can." she said.
I followed the woman to the ambulance. She helped me on. I sat on one of the benches. Spencer lay in front of me, pale. Possibly lifeless.
I took his hand in mine and intertwined our fingers. I put my other hand in top of his and kissed it.
"Please be okay." I whispered. "I can't live without you."
