What is love? Is it the ability to care about someone beyond yourself? To want to protect someone? You cherish someone? Or is it the way their hair shines in the sunlight at six in the morning? The smell of their shampoo lingers on your pillow so you spend all day in bed just to inhale it. The way that their eyes light up when they see you or the way your eyes linger on the spot where they were, long after they abandoned it? Is it the ability to conquer all odds despite everything? In all truth, love is all of those things. Because love is in different shapes and forms; friends, family and significant others.
Damon's POV
Hide and go seek is a fun childish game you play as a kid. In this situation, I wanted to be doing anything but it. The register guy had no idea as to what was going on. I felt around in my pockets, they were completely empty. My keys and phone were in the car.
"Your coffee is ready." The cashier guy announced and I glanced over at Robert who looks around.
"No one else is in here." He stated, that was his voice.
"I swore I saw a kid just a second ago." The cashier dude looked around and I ducked. Next to me was a stand with souvenir shirts. I shoved one onto my head and made my voice high pitched.
"A guy?" What nonsense, I'll take the shirt as well please." I handed the dude a twenty and grabbed my coffee before hurrying outside. I could barely see and once inside my car I ripped my shirt off of my head.
"What's with you?" Aiden was awake now. He gave me a confused look but my heart galloped in my chest.
"Robert just walked inside. The other car." Aiden got out and we immediately ran to the other car. I had grabbed my keys and made sure to slash his tires then opened the drivers door. I unlocked the boot when I found Paisley wasn't inside the car.
"They're here!" Aiden called out and I rushed around the side. Robert was talking with the guy inside the gas station. We were running out of time. I picked up Paisley and held her bridal style, she was asleep. Aiden hauled Jake over his shoulder and Jake was asleep too. His left arm was bandaged, he didn't have a hand. I wanted to throw up but I knew that I didn't have the time to do so, so I just ran. I placed Paisley in the passenger seat and put on her seatbelt. My hands shook and I knew my PTSD was ready to hit me. Concentrate Damon, save her. I slammed the car door shut and then got into the drivers side. I started the ignition and in the rear view mirror, Robert was jogging towards his car. I slammed my foot down on the gas and the car lurched forward.
"Aiden you gotta call the others, explain what's going on." I told him. I could hear a phone ringing before a loud bang. I flinched and saw that Robert had a gun. BANG! Then there was the familiar sound of metal on metal. He was shooting at my car! The bastard! I couldn't drive any faster and swerved around the corner, thank god I could drift. Then there was a bang and shattering glass. Aiden gasped and dropped his phone. I looked back at him, his hand pressed to his shoulder, he would live if I could get him to a hospital.
"What's going on?" Alex demanded as I sped down the empty highway.
"Are you guys alright?" Piper asked.
"Fine." Aiden grunted.
"Robert knows we've got Jake and Paisley." I replied.
"Shit." I heard someone say in the background.
"We're going to a hospital." I told Aidne who was seemingly pale.
"Why?" Piper sounded panicked.
"To get Paisley and Jake and Aiden checked out." I needed the car to go faster, but my foot was to the damn floor.
"What's wrong with Aiden?" Piper shrieked.
"I'm fine Pip, don't worry about me. Just get home and wait for us to get back." Aiden instructed.
"Like hell I will! Damon what's wrong with Aiden?" Piper demanded.
"He was shot." I was too surprised by Piper demanding something. It caught me off guard and I could feel Aiden glaring at me.
"Is he okay?" She demanded.
"I'm fine. It hit my shoulder, the bleeding has stopped." Aiden was lying. Fresh blood coated his fingers when I looked back. I checked the rear view mirror and could see a car following us. Crap.
"Are Paisley and Jake okay?" Alex asked.
"They're asleep. Jake's got a bandage around his left arm. I think Robert's following." But he wasn't catching up. He wasn't getting any closer so for now we were safe.
"How far is the nearest hospital?" Aiden asked, he was in agony.
"Not far, twenty minutes at the most." I promised. Then Robert's car disappeared, maybe he ran out of fuel. I hoped that was the reason because I wouldn't handle it if it were anything different.
