Declan was sitting in his room reeling thoughts in his head. swimming usually helped him clear those thought a but they had closed off the beach. Declan wanted to go back there and see the girl. he wanted to confront her about who she is and why she was there. he could have sworn that he had seen her before. he racked his memory. where had he seen those gold eyes and jet black hair. the sad, soft tone of her voice.
Declan lay back on his bed as he thought about it. he could hear the waves crashing on the shore and the sound of his mother making breakfast in the room right beneath his. he could smell bacon and eggs, his stomach rumbled at the thought. he hadn't eaten anything he was to busy trying to get his mother off the beach and looking for that girl. he kept looking back to see if he could catch a glimpse of her. he didn't.
Declan got up and walked to the window. he couldn't stand looking at the roof of the bunk bed. he watched the sea crash and move against the shore the way it kissed it like a lazy flower in the breeze. Declan was watching closely. he had nearly drowned when he was little. they said it was a miracle he got out of the rip. he remembered the waves closing in on him then...nothing after that. he was lying on the shore. what had happened to him.
He went downstairs and sat at the kitchen island in the large room. it was painted blue with all the appliances scattered around the room to make it look like a puzzle. Declan had helped pick it out with his father. his mother was at the stove opposite him, with her brown head down.
"They are arranging Bruno's funeral for next week," she said without looking up from what she was doing. Declan nodded, knowing she couldn't see him. it was best to keep quiet when she was In this mood. she moved mechanically around the kitchen, like a robot testing it's new oils. She put his food in front of him and he ate it all within minutes. he saw her watching him and he looked up from his breakfast.
"Your a lot like your father you know," she said with a tiny smile. she then turned and walked off.
"I'm am going to try to get some sleep. please try to keep it down and.... be careful please." he heard her say. Declan watched her go. he felt sorry for his mother she had been through so much. he heard the door to her bedroom shut and the sound of her getting under the covers. he quickly finished his meal. he opened he front door as quietly as possible. he walked across the street to the beach. the police had taken the tape down but people were still afraid to go on the beach if a killer was stalking it. his bare feet sank into the sand as he walked towards the water. Declan wanted to know what happened so he kept walking until he reached the waters edge. then he saw her she was barley visible the sun making her seem almost transparent. He let the memory of that awful day engulf him.
Declan was swimming in the water he wanted to go deeper, wanted to swim more. but he was only five he couldn't go anymore. plus he could see the water swirling as the rip mounted. he felt himself being pulled by he current. he couldn't swim against it so he let it take him. he was dragged underwater, the waves pushing him deeper until he couldn't see the sun gleaming on the waters surface anymore. for a few moments he heard someone calling him. he realized that was his mothers voice. he wanted to follow it, but was oh so tired. then he saw her, swimming towards him. Declan couldn't move couldn't scream. the pressure of the water was getting stronger, the water colder. her black her flew around her face like a black halo. her body covered with small strips of seaweed. Her gold eyes seemed to be calling to him. she held out a hand, but Declan wasn't afraid, he somehow knew that she wasn't going to hurt him. next thing he knew he was laying on the beach getting CPR from his mother. the girl was gone but he had somehow gotten to shore.
Declan opened his eyes and realized in the memory he had moved thigh deep in the water. so he had seen her before. he remembered it clearly. he heard something behind him he turned around and stopped dead.
