Declan sat there and stared at her. He was still trying to get past that rattling dream he had had just before he blacked out. He wanted to bombard her with questions. Like how had she known his father? or why had she promised to protect him? But he held himself in check. Instead Declan was watching the way the blue light from the moon pool played off in rainbow streams in her hair, and the way her eyes glowed like newly polished gold. He again was struck that she was to beautiful to commit any crime such as the ones he heard about. She looked lost and afraid, and after what Declan learned what happened to her, He didn't blame her. She got up abruptly and paced the length of the pool. It was still glowing blue and the water seemed to react whenever she passed by it.
"Why did you bring me here?" He asked her. He was sitting up now suddenly less dizzy. He leaned against the rough jagged wall of the cave. She had her back to him, facing the water. She turned around and the blue glow from the pool made a sort of cloak making it look like she was glowing from behind.
"Because I want to show you something," she said as she walked toward him. She extended her small pale hand and when he hesitantly placed it in hers she hoisted him off his feet. He felt like he was about to stumble over but he felt her small hands holding him steady, as if they could keep him grounded when gravity couldn't. She led him through a hallway attached to the moon pool room. he hadn't even noticed there was a staircase there. He was taken through a long narrow corridor that was dark and damp. Declan could feel the moisture rubbing on his skin and he breathed it in, loving the familiar territory. She stopped when she was about to round a corner of yet another room in the large bowels of the volcano.
"Close your eyes." She whispered in his ear. He obeyed and he felt her lead him again. She stopped ageing a few feet later and he felt her lean close to him again.
"Open your eyes," she said. He did and he was standing in silence. It was a large circular shaped room. The rough edges making it look like a baseball had been cut in half and this was what was on the inside. But the room wasn't what caught his attention. It was what was in the room. Small blue glow lights had been spread all through the black wall making it look like a shining night sky. It was one of the most beautiful things he had ever seen.
"Each light represents a soul that had passed at sea." She explained "I watch over them and make sure that they have save pass through. Even my victims who had died by my hand. Because I AM the sea. So it still counts."
"But how do you know when a new one has come," he said, his eyes still transfixed on the glowing blue lights that coated the dark granite wall.
"Because everything that dies has to pass through me. I then in return take them to Davy Jones and he sees if they are worthy enough to pass through to the locker." She explained, turning to him so she could speak directly to him. The glow of the souls highlighted her hair and one side of her face. The side that was facing away from the blue glow was shadowed, making her look like she had two sides to her. Knowing her attitudes she probably did.
"I thought Davy Jones and the locker were a myth," he said. Davy Jones was the keeper of the locker and the master of the sea. Every soul who passed at sea would need to go through him to see if they were worthy to serve on his ship. If not they would disappear into the dark abyss that is said to be the locker. It is also said in legend that his crew all owe him debt and cannot escape until they have paid it. Declan shuddered at the thought of it.
"No. Davy Jones is very real. I pity anyone who has the unfortunate luck to come across him and his crew," she said, turning so her back was now to Declan.
"But wasn't he the one who gave you this life. You know, the one your living now?" He asked. He saw her head bow lower and he immediately regretted his question.
"You mean the curse to kill all that hurt others. The curse that says I can never be more than a few miles from the water otherwise I get dehydrated and eventually my veins start to rub like sandpaper and beg for moisture," she said. She had turned around and faced him and he saw that she was trembling and close to tears. She fell to the floor. The blue dress she still wore was in taters it spread out around her making her look small in the big gown. He walked towards her and knelt so he was on his knees as well. She looked beautiful even tearstained. He looked at her lips.
At that moment he didn't want to do anything but kiss her.....
