Declan was silent. the question hung I'm the air like a bad gas waiting to get drifted out with the wind. Jordan still had his back to Declan, so he couldn't see his face. Which was a good thing because then he would easily see through the horror on Declan's face. Jordan finally turned around and regarded him. He looked older than sixteen with his ruffles up hair and red swollen eyes from crying. It took Declan a moment to remember that Jordan wasn't that little kid who used to be scared of the deep end at the beach. His brother was growing. Declan put on the bravest face he could manage.
"Yes I would tell you if I knew who killed shane," He said. His throat was burning from the lie. He needed to get out of here and get some air.
"Get some sleep you look like you need it." Declan told Jordan as he turned around to reach for the handle. when Declan was just about to walk outside his brother spoke again.
"Thanks, Dec," he said. That only made the burning in his throat worse.
He shut the bedroom door and slowly, as quietly as possible crept downstairs to the front door. As soon as he opened it cool air rushed across his face cooling him instantly. The sea air acting like a barrier where no one could get him. He needed to confront Loreley. She had made her last kill and upset the last family. Even as he strutted toward Salem, his mind still hasn't caught up with what he was doing. As if he was being controlled to move and his mind was watching everything. He made it to the beach, the wind making the sand crackle against his suit pants. For a moment he let the air and the cool breeze engulf him. He felt like he was floating on the sea. He felt someone come up next to him. He didn't bother looking who it was I mean who else would be wandering the beach at night? when Declan finally turned to see Loreley his breath was still taken away. Her hair had come loose of her bun and now hung in shiny black strands up to her waist. She still wore the beautiful blue satin dress but somehow during the night she had taken off her mask. Her black eyeliner was dripping in river down her face. She had been crying. He didn't know how to comfort her and somehow he felt like his heart was ripping into a thousand fragments whenever he saw her face like that.
"What did you to to me Loreley?" he asked her. He wanted to keep her from getting angry. He need to ask his questions.
"I put you in a trance. you wouldn't wake up until I did what I needed to do." she replied. She was looking out at the sea like it held all the answers. I guess in this case it did, he thought.
"Why Shane?" he asked her. He wouldn't believe that Shane was capable of ever hurting a fly. He wouldn't even kill a spider that had once jumped on Jordan's head.
"Everybody has their reasons Declan. you don't need to know mine." she was talking in riddles again. Not telling him the full thing.
"It's not fair Loreley what did he ever-" he cut off before he could finish. The look in her gold eyes had become angry. He watched, with shock that the once smooth waves that had kissed the shore now became angry and vengeful like a hungry dog.
"Declan you don't know what it was like. He practically tore my heart out of my chest!" She was screaming now and Declan was preparing for the worst "You don't know what it's like...To watch it happen over and over again." she finished as a bare whisper. she sink to the ground in her dress and looked again at the sea. only then did he notice that as Loreley calmed, so did the sea. The large waves fell flat and the dark clouds that had gathered overhead began to vanish. Declan could now see the open velvet black sky again. Declan had thought that she was about to kill him. But no.Moshe held back.
"Why didn't you hurt me?" he asked her. she looked up from her hands, that she had buried against her face.
It took her quite a while for her to answer.
"I promised you father that's why," she finally said. But that didn't make sense
His father had been missing for years....
