Declan was staring at the venue for the ball. It was early morning, with one more day to the ball the decor had to be set up. The council, this year had chosen Rockfall beach. It was connected to Salem beach by a waterfall that runs through both bodies of water into the currents.
They were on a large,circular wooden deck on the rockfalls. The rockfalls were high flat rock cliffs that you could jump off into the ocean. A large deck was placed over the top for dancing, eating and mingling. Declan wasn't sure he would be doing much socializing because he would be to busy watching Loreley in case someone 'accidentally' fell off the rock cliffs. He was emanating nervousness, you could practically smell it on him.
He moved around robotically, getting orders from his mother about where to place everything. The council made a pretty big deal out of this ball every year, so it was no surprise when Declan overheard his mother talking about a secret surprise to one of the council members last night. Declan did what he was told. it would get his mind of the night. For now, he thought bitterly.
Declan was getting ready in his bedroom. He stood in front of the stand up mirror and admired himself. He cleaned up pretty nicely if he had to say so himself. He wore a nicely fitted black tux with a sea blue tie. He had paired his look with a black mask with intricate blue and gold geometric lines. He had slicked his dark gold hair back making him look at least 20 when he was actually 17. He looked like his father he thought sadly as he walked down to see his mother and his younger brother waiting for him at the bottom of the stairs. His mother smiled at him. Her floor length, mint green dress set of the color of her gold/hazel eyes which were hid behind a plain gold mask.His brother looked like a younger version of him, instead of wearing black he wore a dark silver tux that used to be his fathers and a black and white mask .They walked out of the house as a family, keeping their heads held high. when they reached the sight of the venue Declan was stunned even though he had helped set up.
The trees covering the deck were hung with glass lanterns that illuminated the dance floor. The moon was high and full casting soft shadows on the sea view that they had. There was also a few flashing lights hanging from the stage where the DJ was setting up his equipment. People were starting to arrive to the party. The appreciated glances were seen even through their masks. They had truly done a wonderful job. Declan had nearly forgotten the days last events when he saw her show up. He was glued to the spot staring. He also realized that he was not the only one.
Loreley came from the beach way. she Wore a dark blue satin flare gown. It was patterned with gold beading along the ruffles at the bottom with some on the sweetheart neckline. The strapless dress showed off her beautiful pale shoulders paired with a silver locket necklace over the top. Her hair had been twisted into a stylishly messy bun which was held together by little clips, that if u looked close enough would look like small gold stars. her mask was gold with silver and blue lines along the eyes and the sides of the mask. She was the most beautiful creature Declan had ever seen. But that was putting it mildly. And it looked like he wasn't the only one who thought so. The guys were giving her leering looks down her body and the girls were giving her suspicious glances. You could instantly tell that she was not one of the locals.
Her eyes locked with his and he could tell that she was trying to send a message to him. She glided on the floor, as if on water and stooped In front of him. She was wearing high heels so she was nearly his height. Declan tried to picture her as the cold heartless killer everyone had made her out to be. But he couldn't, not when she was looking at him with the most amazing golden eyes that seemed to hold countless secrets in them. She leaned in so her cool breath was touching his throat. suddenly it was as if they were the only people in the world. He stopped breathing when she spoke into his ear.
"Someone is gonna die tonight."
