Declan still stood in the doorway, shielding his brother from the menacing presence of the stranger who was lurking in the door way. He didn't really know how to react in situations like this but he knew how to fight if need be. He wouldn't let this man, who was meant to be dead, lay a hand on his brother. Over his dead body.
"From the look on your face I can see I am already to late. You have already had an encounter with her." He said the last word like it was curse. But even as Jordan frowned, Declan knew who this man was talking about. He was the man that broke her heart and made her into what she was today. Matthew pushed past Declan and into the foyer. He surveyed the place and seemed to make an analysis in his head. As Declan was about to protest. He heard footsteps coming Down the stairs and he knew his mother was awake. Declan's mother walked down the stairs, all tousled and tired-looking. When he saw her eyes register Matthew in the foyer she smiled.
"Matthew your here, thank god," she said as she reached the last step and went to hug him. What the hell? Since when did his mother know this man and how come Declan had never seen him before.his mother didn't really make it a habit to talk to crazy people but he always trusted her judgment. He just hoped she wasn't wrong.
"Hello Suzanne. I got your call I heard you needed help." He replied as he reached around to hug her back. His mother had called him. This was the first he heard of this. Then again this was the first time he was back in the house for a full morning, and not running of to go and find Loreley.
"Sit, I'll get you a drink." His mother said as she went to the kitchen. Jordan had disappeared upstairs. Or at least Declan thought he had disappeared upstairs. He didn't see him leave the room. Declan followed his mother the blue jigsaw puzzle kitchen, saw her turn the stove to boil the kettle.
"Mum, something you wanna tell me?" He asked her. Her back was turned to him so he couldn't see her face, though he would have like to see it. To gauge her reaction on the topic.
" I don't have to explain myself to Declan. I simply called Matthew to investigate the murders that have been happening. He has dealt with this kind of stuff before, and all over the country too." She replied. She had turned around and he could finally see how tired she was. There were bags under her eyes and she looked thinner, her cheekbones seemed more prominent than he remembered. She didn't really look like the mother he had grown up with.
"But I thought that it was a wild animal. So shouldn't you call animal control instead?" He asked. He was trying to get her to reveal more than she would with her mysterious short answers. But as his mother, she knew exactly would he would try to say.
"No he is here to see what it was. And Declan I don't want you going in and out t night and in the morning. I'm giving you a curfew. From 9 am in the morning to 8pm. I need to be able to see you at these times. It's not safe for you to wander near the beach, especially Salem."she told him. She was clearly hinting at something. Something that was on Salem beach that she didn't want Declan to be near. Could it be possible that she knew about Loreley. He didn't think so. His mother was always the one to tell them that they were just myths and nothing more. But lately he wasn't sure. His mother was nervous about something and he didn't like it.
"Okay mum. Curfew, got it." He told her as he walked away. Declan went to the living room and saw Matthew sitting there in the sky blue couch. He sat with his leg crossed over his other, in a relaxed fashion, but also alert.
"Can I ask you something?" Matthew asked. He had a strange tone to his voice like he already knew the answer to what Declan had to say.
"I guess so." Declan replied, cautious but still showing bravery. Matthew seemed to pick up on that. Declan didn't know if he seemed threaded or if he was impressed.
"What is the legend of Salem beach, I heard it was quite a tall tale from one of the locals," he said. His cement grey eyes seemed to be piercingly his.
"I know who you are," Declan said. Matthew chuckled darkly and looked at him.
"I highly doubt that but go on anyway. I'd like to hear what you had to say." He replied, amusement still flickering in his eyes.
"You're the one that hurt her. Loreley. Made her kill herself. I read about it." Declan lied he wanted to get the mans reaction. But it didn't change. Aside from the humour vanishing and his eyes growing dark like wet pavement.
"But could it have been me. That legend has been around my family for generations. It has killed nearly all of us. But now, we won't be the ones to hurt anymore." He muttered darkly as they both heard the kettle whistle as the kettle reached its boiling point.
What did that mean? They wouldn't hurt anymore. Who would hurt if not them? He got the thought as soon as it had entered his head. This crazy man. Who might or might not have been the reason for Loreley being this way, was going to kill her again. He just didn't know if it meant for good or not....
