Declan was still standing on the beach, staring at the ocean long after she had gone. The sun was setting in the horizon making the water turn a pinky blue hue. He was barley aware of his mother calling him from the porch of the house. The whispered words and her enchanting eyes seemed more like a dream the longer he stood there. Like he had never really come out here at all and he was inside in bed waiting for the nightmare to be over.

She said she was meeting him at the ball. The had the mask ball every year on Halloween to represent the new fortune and to honor the dead. The ball was set on the day where the boundaries between the living and dead were weakest and the spirits of the dead could roam free. Declan thought it odd that a ghost in a ball gown would be dancing. But it was island tradition so Declan had to go. Plus his mother was on the committee to plan the ball this year.

Declan walked back up to the house, not even realizing it. His mind was pulling in all different directions at once. It was dark now and Declan was sure he had tanned a bit while he was outside. When he got inside he sought out food. He found his mother in the kitchen cooking what looked like lamb to him.

"Declan were you out all day?" she asked concern creasing her brow.

"Yeah I needed some fresh air I hope you didn't worry," He said.

"No it's just.." never mind go get you brother supper is nearly ready.

"Okay." he replied. Even his mother was acting strange today. Must be the sobering mood, he thought to himself. They ate dinner as a family, lamb cutlets with salad, and tried to fill in the gap of silence that stretched between them every so often.

Declan excused himself from the table early because he wanted to do some research on his mysterious friend he met at the beach. He loaded up the Internet and typed into the search engine 'Tibet Island Legends'. Loads of his came up like the leavened of the sea dragon and the island monster but nothing he was searching for. after half an hour of searching and coming up with nothing he was about to give up when he saw a screen link flashing. It said 'Tale of Loreley'. Declan clicked it. a black screen popped up and then a moon was slowly rising from the corner of the screen over the sea. He realized it was a video and he quickly grabbed head phones and plugged them into the speakers.

"The legend of Loreley,' said a voice on the computer."Is a legend so beautiful, so disgustingly bloody.... that it will make your insides come out... literally." There was a dark chuckle before the voice continued.

" She was formally known as Loreley, the most beautiful girl in her village. She was loved by many boys but believed in saving herself for the right one. He eventually came along. Or so she thought..." Declan was perched on the edge of his chair as if the narrator wasn't speaking loud enough, even though Declan had headphones. " One day Loreley was at home making dinner for her fiancée, her beloved. it is said that her house was along the beach and the only way to get to town was by walking through it. So she went. But what she saw she would never forget...."

"When she was halfway along the beach she stopped dead. Her fiancée was on the beach, a woman in his arms, not Loreley. Loreley dropped her shopping bag and ran back to the house I'm tears. It is said that if you walk along the beach today you can still hear her crying being carried by the wind." Declan froze. he had heard something like that but he had thought he was hearing things.

"She packed her stuff and fled the house. The man she loved had ripped out her heart, mentally but it hurt like it was physical. She ran down to the beach swearing she never wanted to felt that way again. So she began walking towards the water. Never stopping, never looking back until she had walked so long she drowned. It is said that in her last moments she wanted revenge on her fiancée, wanted him to suffer, feel her pain..." Declan was about ready to explode if they kept up that creepy pause thing.

"In her last minutes of breath she was granted a wish, by the Keeper of the Souls that died at sea, Davy Jones. he said she could live again as long as she got revenge on any man who made a woman feel this. With her new strands of power Loreley lured her fiancée into the water with her new voice. A siren. When he reached for her she stuck her hand through his chest... and ripped out his beating heart...." Declan sucked in a breath. She had some anger issues, he thought.

"She then spent the rest of her days wandering the sea searching for all the lost souls and preying on the ones who feel a need to cause heartbreak....

And that ladies and gentleman is the Legend of Loreley." the narrating stopped and soft haunting music began to play as they did the credits.

So that was how Loreley became what she was. she practically made a deal with the devil. The devil of the sea he might add.

Well it was official he was going to meet a broken hearted serial killer at a mask ball where every one gets drunk. Great this should turn out peachy, he thought bitterly. There was only one thing to do. He had to show Loreley a good time before anyone else became her next victim....Or he did.
