you know what i was hoping,
that i could leave this star-crossed world behind
but when they cut me open,
i guess i change my mind.

i can't believe i agreed to this."

phil looked over at dan, a small grin immediately forming on his lips.

"well hey, you came completely by your own will, so don't go complaining."

dan opened his mouth to protest, but quickly shut it when he realized phil was actually right. he sat back in his seat, grumbling like a grumpy two year old.

phil smiled to himself contentedly, bringing back conversation. "so, ready to see the stars?"

dan turned to him. "sure. i don't understand how you're so excited about them, they're literally flaming fire balls up in the sky, but whatever."

dan turned back to the window, ignoring the incredulous look phil shot him. but of course, phil gave him the look for a reason.

"what do you mean you 'don't understand'?! haven't you ever seen stars during a pretty night?"

dan shrugged. "well, sure i have. i've just never really cared for it."

phil scoffed. "don't you appreciate any form of beauty in the world, dan?"

"no."

"why not?" phil asked, giving him a questioning look before returning his attention back to the road.

"like i said, i just don't feel the need to care for it."

phil shook his head, a small smile on his face. dan gave him a questioning look, but didn't comment.

the rest of the ride was silent, until the two boys pulled into a cute, baby blue house with a garage door that was so white it seemed to illuminate and glow from the moonlight reflecting off of it.

"we're here."

dan followed phil up to his attic, eyes looking all around his house, taking it in before he went to the roof. the classic baby and family pictures lined the walls, and dan even found himself lightly smiling at a few pictures of a small phil, with ginger hair and the same big toothy grin he wore today.

"dan, stop looking at my gross old pictures, come on!" phil exclaimed, rushing over to dan and taking his hand, starting to pull him upstairs and towards the attic.

dan let out a small squeak of protest at their hands, but phil didn't seem to pay attention. he dragged dan up the stairs, quickly pulling down the attic ladder, then letting go of dan's hand to grip onto it.

when he made it up, he peeked down at the boy beneath him. "need any help?"

dan shook his head, climbing up the short ladder up to the attic himself, watching as phil pulled it up and shut the small door on the floor.

"c'mon!" phil cheered, rushing over to a rather large window. dan gave him a confused look when phil opened it, turning back to him and waving him over.
