jump starting your car,
'cause the cities a bore,
buying e-cigarettes
at the convenience store,
making new clichés,
on our own little tour,
let's ride.

dan howell was cold.

he'd been walking in the rain, everything slowly and steadily pouring down around him. the rain was hitting his slouched posture, making him shiver with each droplet.

he took this as a moment to feel extra sad. it was the perfect moment to do it. with the rain coming down upon him, lost all alone in his thoughts. but now was not the time to mope. he couldn't be late to school again, and he knew it.

but then he heard the rumbling of wheels crushing small pebbles and rocks, and saw a car pull up beside him out of the corner of his eye.

he turned to look at it, and watched as the car window rolled down to reveal phil lester, giving him an expectant look.

when dan did nothing to move, phil exasperatedly sighed and said,

"what? do you expect me to just drive by and let you walk? rain may be pretty, but i wouldn't want to walk this far in it."

dan did nothing but shake his head, his posture now stiff and frozen.

phil rolled his eyes. "dan, seriously. i'm not an axe murderer. get in the car."

dan looked down the street, at the long trek he still had to walk through to get to school. he let out a defeated sigh before walking over to phil's car, getting in the passengers seat.

phil smiled at him. "morning, dan. i'm guessing the first few minutes of your walk was pleasant" he joked, as he drove away from the curb and back onto the road.

dan didn't smile. he just grunted in reply. you couldn't necessarily blame him. he was terrified. phil was the only person at his school who could really confirm if his tears were black or not, and Dan still didn't really trust him.

phil noticed dan's silence right away. "aw c'mon dan, talk to me. how was your morning? besides the walking part, anyways." phil asked causally, avoiding a pothole in the street.

dan rolled his eyes, turning his attention away from phil and looking out the window.

phil chuckled. "you're a sassy one, aren't you? you should let that part of you shine through more, it's cute."

phil could feel dan glaring at him, and he laughed. "aw, really dan! no need to be like that. why not talk? it'll make this car ride 10x less awkward, buddy."

dan scoffed. "buddy?" he raised an eyebrow at phil. all he got in return was a sarcastically shocked gasp.

"ah! so he can talk." phil replied, grinning at dan.

dan turned his attention back to the window, saying nothing.

"oh, maybe not." phil said, shaking his head to himself as he pulled up to the school parking lot.

they both got out of the car, phil then taking his place, walking next to dan.

"what are you- what are you doing?" dan asked, surprised that phil didn't start running away from him.

"what do you mean?" phil asked, nudging him. "can't friends walk next to each other?"

dan shook his head vigorously. "n-no! i mean, they can, but we're not-"

"great!" phil interrupted, slinging his arm around the brown haired boys shoulders.

what phil did next shocked everyone around them, dan especially.

he firmly grabbed dan's hips, lifting him up, and pulled him up onto his back.

"onwards, geronimo!" phil screeched, laughing while running as fast as he could, dan on his back.

"phil! what the hell-!" dan yelled out, before phil started running up the steps. dan squeaked and tightened his grip on him.

"phil if you even get close to fucking dropping me, I swear-"

that's as far as dan got before phil tripped.

"shit!" dan screamed, he and phil both tumbling to the ground, everyone around them still watching.

dan sat up almost immediately, ignoring the pain that shot through his body from hitting the ground.

"phil! what the hell?!" dan snapped, smacking the boy next to him on the arm, making him groan in pain.

he rolled over, facing dan. they stared at each other for a moment, before slowly, a grin stretched across phil's face.

and that's when they both lost it.

to most people, dan and phil looked like complete maniacs. laughing so hard they couldn't even breathe, covered in bruises and scrapes. surprisingly though, they didn't care.

dan hadn't had this much fun in forever, and phil was just happy he made dan laugh this much.

"i know it." phil couldn't help but think.

"i know there's a happy person in there somewhere."
