~...but you say you're over and done with me---aw yeah yeah yeah~
"Bryson!" Marlena called my name as she stood in front of me with a box on her hip. I looked up at her.
"I've been calling your name for the past five minutes! I said we're about to go. This is the last of my things."
"Where's Harley?" I asked.
"Upstairs getting her book bag," Marlena said," the U-haul is waiting for us outside."
"Alright," I sighed putting my head down.
This shit was really happening to me right now. My once perfect home now gone down the drain.
"I'll bring her around sometime this weekend," Marlena mentioned referring to Harley.
"I'll be around."
"Oh and uh here," Marlena dug in her back pocket and handed me over both her engagement and wedding rings.
"I don't need them anymore. They're of no use, but since you gave them to me, I decided to give them back. Do whatever you want with them."
"What makes you think I want them?" I ask setting them on the glass coffee table in front of me. Funny how she's stopped wearing hers and it's not even officially over yet, but I still had on mine.
Marlena just shrugged,"I don't know just a thought. Don't forget we meet up with our lawyers on next..."
"... Tuesday morning," I finished the sentence for her," I know that already. Quit talking to me like I'm a kid."
"I wouldn't have to if you had such the good memory you claim to have. You forget lots of things like birthdays, anniversaries...that's one reason I'm gone now."
"I'll be glad when we are officially divorced," I lied.
I really didn't want to go through with this deep down inside. I loved Marlena. She was the only girl I had ever loved since high school. She knew me better than I knew myself sometimes and I hated that. I hate that I'm letting my family slip away like this. I kind of wanted it to still work but what else can I do if she doesn't even want to hash it out like the grown ups we are?
"Fuck you Bry--" Marlena began to say but stopped when she spotted Harley trudging down the stairs.
"What were you about to say?" I taunted causing her to roll her eyes at me.
"You ready to go baby?"
"Yes mommy," Harley frowned," Can Daddy please come with us? Pretty please."
Lord knows that I wanted to for her sake.
"Nah, baby girl. Daddy uh... Daddy can't come with you to your new house."
"Yes you can! You can sleep with me in my new big girl bed," Harley whined climbing into my lap," I don't pee anymore."
I laughed as I placed a kiss on the top of her forehead. I looked back down at the two rings on the table, then up at Mar. All I could think about is how happy we used to be. How happy we made each other, but the last few months brought us everything but happiness. I even put my music on hold and that was my life. Maybe it was time to let this relationship go for real.
"I know baby. I love you," I told her, trying to change the subject," Do you love Daddy?"
Harley nodded as she held onto my thumb,"Yes, I do."
"Well that's all the love I need then."
Marlena watched us with a sad look on her face. I could tell she was feeling some type of way about us ending too and needed the closure, but she wasn't the kind to come straight forward and admit it. You had to pull it out of her for her to say so. That was one thing I disliked about her. I was simple for the most part and I like things to be straightforward. Plus, it had been her decision to get a divorce. I thought we were doing just fine until she came in one night with the papers. She told me that we had changed and that we had grown apart, which we have. Our relationship went through a lot of changes after our senior year in high school. Then it went under even more stressing times once my singing got me somewhere in the industry and my first studio album Trapsoul blew up. It was stupid of me to think that hurrying up and getting married would make all our troubles fade away.
"Alright, Harley," Marlena cleared her throat," give your Daddy a kiss and a hug goodbye. We have to go now, the man is waiting on us outside."
"I don't want to go," Harley pouted.
"You'll be back this weekend. I promise."
Harley looked at me with wide eyes that were on the verge of tears. She didn't quite know yet what was going on between me and her mom but she did know that we weren't the 'happy mommy and daddy' anymore. She also knew that we no longer were living together anymore. Marlena and I are still trying to find a way to break it to her that we are getting a divorce. But Harley was one of those smart kids to even just be three, she would probably figure it out on her own sooner or later.
"You'll come get me?" She asked me.
I nodded," Of course I will kid."
Harley kissed me on my cheek as she squeezed her tiny arms around my neck.
Now I wanted to cry because Harley was my whole heart. I didn't like to see her upset. I kept my feelings in because I didn't want Harley to see me break down like that.
"Bye Daddy," Harley waved at me as Marlena took her by the other hand to the front door. I flashed her a smile and waved back.
"Bye Bryson," Marlena sighed, shaking her head at me as she opened the door. After she closed it shut, I buried my head back in my hands.
Two and a half years of marriage and my life out the door like it never happened. I guess it's true what they say: Giving a good relationship the title of marriage will only fuck it up.
