~...and ever since that day you approached me, I've been thinking bout you and you only...~
"We out here snapchat. In this Lou-Ville heat," I sighed throwing up an "L" with my fingers as I focused the camera on Harley and me," This is a cool kid chalk zone only. Harls, what you want to tell'em?"
Harley smiled shyly as she hid her face in my arm.
"Goodbye," she waved at the camera lens.
I laughed as I ended the video and added it to my story.
I shoved my phone back in my right pocket.
"Draw, Daddy," Harley ordered as we sat in the middle of the driveway surrounded by chalk sticks.
"I'm not a good artist," I shook my head squinting because of the blinding Sun.
It was hot as hell outside, and Harley wanted to go out and play. Of course, I had to be out with her, she wasn't old enough to be alone.
Even with my shorts and Cardinals jersey on, it felt like we were in a sauna.
"Draw," Harley frowned, shoving a yellow chalk stick in my face.
I sighed and accepted it.
It was so hot I could barely think straight. I just began to doodle a big headed stick man with a hat and ball.
Harley giggled once she saw my finished masterpiece.
"What's so funny, Har?" I asked with an eyebrow raised.
"It's ugly," she answered brutally honest.
I made a sad face,"You're a mean little girl."
"No I'm not," Harley shook her head," Come look at my drawing."
Harley stood up on her tiny legs and dusted off her shorts.
She pointed down at the concrete with a smile.
I got up to take a better look at her artwork.
Harley had drawn giant stick people with hair, hats, tattoos, and clothes--unlike me.
"Look," she said to me.
"These are your friends?" I asked squatting in front of her picture.
"No silly. That's you," she shook her head pointing to the only stick figure with glasses on and a microphone in hand," See you're singing like you always do."
"That there is Uncle Swan and Uncle Eric," Harley gestured at the only to men left.
"Who are these three beautiful ladies?" I asked pulling her to my side.
"Me!" Harls sang pointing at the shortest one with a puffy ponytail," Then the one with the sunglasses is Mommy...and that's Naomi."
Harley's smile widened.
"I put you and Naomi together on this side of me and Mommy over on that side because you two aren't friends anymore," she explained sadly.
"No, don't say that. Me and your mom will always be...friends," I assured her even though I knew that wasn't true.
"Yeah, but you're Naomi's new boyfriend," Harley was way too smart for her age.
"That doesn't change a thing," I said poking her side causing her to giggle.
"Promise?"
"I swear."
"Aww, look at the pretty artwork here," Grandma Ann smiled coming over to join us," Now who did this to my driveway."
"Me and Daddy," Harley said raising her hand.
"Wow, that there belongs in a museum, girl," grandma said patting Harley's shoulder,"It could be worth butt loads of money."
Harley stuck her hand out grinning," We need money, money, money, money!"
I laughed as she waited to be paid.
"How much?" Grandma asked pulling out $5.
"Hmm," Harley tapped her foot on the ground,"A hundred dollars!"
"Yeah...no," grandma Ann shook her head and gave Harley the 5 instead.
Harley still took it and ran off into the house with it.
"Beautiful day outside." Grandma Ann spoke.
I stood back on my feet and nodded in agreement,"For the most part."
"I'm really glad you've been here with me. You and Harley both," grandma smiled hugging me.
I hugged her back.
I don't think she knows how much I truly love and care for her--even if I was never around much to show it.
"It's actually nice to be back. I didn't think I could miss it this much."
"When do you plan on leaving me?"
"I wish never," I chuckled a bit,"This week coming up, I have another concert in Atlanta. Then the next week after that, I have to go back to Miami for this divorce court settlement mess."
Grandma shook her head,"Well, aren't you the busy bee."
"You don't even know the half," I yawned," Then not too long after the court date, it will be time for Harley to be heading back to school and I can't just not be around for that. My manager is also booking me new shows on the daily, so I guess I only have a few weeks left out here."
"Well one thing is for sure. Don't wait as long as you did before to come back around and visit your family, Bryson. We always have your best interest at heart no matter the circumstances baby boy. I love you. We love you, and I couldn't be more proud of the wise young fella you've grown to be. If only Louren could see you now," grandma smiled mentioning my mother's name.
Even though I didn't know her much, I used her name as a basis for Harley's middle name when she was born and it seemed to fit perfectly.
"I love you, too MawMaw, and I promise I'll visit more often from here on out."
