She sat at the far end of the table, blonde curls cascading over her concentrated face, as she drew a classic picture of her family, quietly keeping to herself.

He sat on the floor, surrounded by blocks and fire trucks, trying to save the houses, that were, in his mind, on fire, because he was the hero.

Little did they know that they would eventually become best friends, and later fall madly in love. Two different people that bonded over their love of music and crazy sense of humour.

Fast forward 6 years, and that shy blonde girl, Keely and the small fireman Calum are now about to graduate from primary school in a matter of days, and move on to face their next big challenge; high school.

However, that was still two days away, and today they sat outside in the blistering December heat during one of their final lunchtimes, talking about what they had planned for the weekend, which of course, they would be doing together because they were inseparable. The teachers called them ‘double trouble’, their friends knew that you couldn’t hang out with one without the other , and their parents, well, their parents joked about a wedding between the two best friends.

As the bell rang, Calum stood up, brushing the dust from his shorts, and then extending a hand to help Keely up. However, as he helped her up, he noticed that she had become quiet after discussing their plans on going to the beach after school.

“What’s up Keels?” He asked.

“Nothing.” She bluntly replied, plastering on a fake smile.

“Hey, don’t lie to me, I’m your bestest friend in the entire world, if something’s wrong, you can tell me.” He sweetly told her, looking down at her with his bottom lip stuck out in a pout.

Keely smiled to herself, knowing what a good best friend Calum was to her. He has always been there for her, ever she could remember; he was there when she first rode her bike without training wheels, he would make her laugh when she was feeling down and he would be the one  that would always stand up for her. She knew that what she needed to tell him would change things between the two of them, that why she had kept it to herself… until now.

“I’ll talk to you about it after school Cal.” She said, as the ran back to their classrooms.

The bell signalling the day’s end rang, and Calum was already waiting outside their classroom with his bag on his back and Keely’s draped across his arms, patiently waiting for Keely to pack up her table. She walked out of their classroom moments later, with that same, saddened look on her face. Instantly worry spiked in the pit of Calum’s stomach, he hated seeing his bestfriend so concerned about something’ she usually told him everything, never before had she held something back, so whatever it was that Calum was about to hear couldn’t be good.
