~Laura's POV~

"Liz," Jumping up from the couch I tried in a feeble attempt to smooth down the front of my shirt with my hands before moving over to shake her hand.

"I've heard so much about you."

Smiling, she gently takes my hand, shaking it only once before letting it drop. "Now dear, no need to lie to me. If I know my son as well as I know I do, he would not have mentioned me unless it was completely necessary."

"Mom,"

Dismissing Kaiden's comment, Liz cast a sceptical look around the house. "Now the reason for my visit is simple, I want to get to know you, Laura. I mean, you are carrying my grandchild after all."

She wants to get to know me? After everything Kaiden had told me about her, which wasn't a great deal, I found it hard to believe she was here to play the excited grandmother. My guard would need to be up around her, something just didn't feel right.

"You could have called first," Kaiden growled, not bothering to hide his disdain at his mother's unexpected and unwelcome visit. "But you're here now, would you like something to drink?"

"How kind of you to offer and it would be rude of me to decline, shall we sit in the kitchen?" She replied, directing her question toward me instead of her son.

Grinning I motioned in the direction of the kitchen, "Of course, follow me."

Taking the lead I waddled into the kitchen with Kaiden following closely behind.
Placing a firm hand on my back I felt his warm breath on my ear before he whispered quietly. "I'm so sorry about this."

Biting my lip, I smiled. "She's your mother, don't be sorry. We'll have coffee, talk about silly things for a while then she will leave."

"I know my mother, she wants something." He replied.

I knew that he was right without even having to know Liz for very long. She was a kind of person who would use you for what she could get then leave when you were sucked dry. Exactly the type of person I didn't want around my baby, or my boyfriend.

"Is coffee ok?" I questioned, leaning up to grab three mugs down for the top cabinet.

Before I could snag the cool porcelain, a large body pressed against mine and grabbed the cups down, placing them gently on the bench.

"No reaching too high." Kaiden's warm voice tickled my neck as he placed a simple kiss on my temple. "Doctors orders."

"Isn't that cute, Kaiden never did anything around the house when he was a child. I was always the one running around and cleaning up after everyone but I guess that's what mothers do. Something you will have to get used to, all the sacrifices you will have to make just to keep that little pain happy." Liz laughed but it was dry and humourless, never reaching her eyes.

Filling the jug with water I placed it on the hotplate and turned up the heat. "I'm sure it wasn't all bad."

"Oh, I wouldn't be so sure dear."

Grabbing Kaiden's hand I squeezed it gently, "Kaiden and I will do our best to provide for this child no matter what the sacrifices we have to make."

I couldn't quite figure out what Liz wanted or why she chose today to make her introduction months after finding out about the baby and I, all I knew is that it unsettled my stomach.

"White with no sugar please dear." She continues, ignoring my last comment.

"Sure." Smiling, I hand over her coffee then nestle back into the crook of Kaiden's arm, blowing gently on my own tea.
