Something Unexpected

Chapter Nine (Edited)

~Kaiden's POV~

After I carried Laura up to bed the previous night I left and went home. Things were still weird between her brother and I even though he kept trying to make conversation.
As I walked down the halls the following day I could see people whispering and giggling amongst themselves, my guess was someone had done something the night before and it was now big news. Tracking down my locker I emptied my bag and grabbed out my History book, ready for my first class.
I took my usual seat at the back next to Connor and Eric, my other best friend I'd known since I was five years old.

"What's everyone talking about?" I asked while opening my book.

Connor looked around then lent over to whisper in my ear, "Rumor has it goody goody Laura Evans is pregnant."

I stopped dead, "What? Who told you that?"

"No one needed too." He shrugged then moved back to his seat, "She rocked up to school today wearing a singlet that showed off her bump."

"I wonder who the dad is, she won't tell anyone." Eric questioned beside me.

Connor laughed, "Poor guy is now tied down for the rest of his life."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I knew eventually people would have to find out but I didn't think it would have to be so soon. Anger prickled under my skin. I couldn't believe she hadn't even considered how this would look. 

"I bet it's a band nerd."

"Or maybe it's a teacher, she has her head so far up their asses." Connor joked, "Kaiden you alright man? You look like you want to punch someone."

"Yeah what's the deal with you and Evans anyway, I noticed you two hanging out a lot recently. Did you know she was pregnant?" Eric asked, his tone understanding. He knew.

I nodded once, "Yeah I did."

"Why didn't you tell us! This is the best news I've ever heard. Didn't even know the frigid had it in her."

"Connor don't be a dick." I barked, earning odd looks from people around us. 

"Fuck what crawled up your ass?"

"Just shut up."

Connor shot Eric a confused look, "Why do you care so much about Laura Evans all of a sudden? It's not like you guys are together."

"Connor maybe leave it?" Eric pushed. Hell yeah he knew.

I had thought about telling my friends but I wasn't sure how they would react. Taking a deep breath I ran a hand through my hair before looking over at my friends. 

"Because, it's mine."

Shocked expressions crossed Connor's face. His jaw dropped open before he was able to speak. "What did you just say? Cause it sounded like you just said it's yours? As in her baby is yours, but that would never happen." He joked, laughing awkwardly and looking and Eric who had his head down, slowly shaking it back and forth.

"That is what I said, Laura is having my baby." I said the last part louder than I anticipated, more than a dozen people turned with amused expressions on their faces.

"No way."

"I didn't even know you'd slept with her." Eric confessed.

Shrugging I packed up my things, "I have to go fine Laura, see if she's okay."

"So what? Now you're her knight in shining armor?"

"No. If I was I wouldn't have gotten her pregnant in the first place."

Slinging my bag over my shoulder I pushed through the small corridor between the desks and walked straight out the door. I guess there was no hiding the fact I was going to be a dad anymore, the whole fucking school knew.

"Laura, wait up." I yelled into the hallway. I watched as she slowly turned around with a awkward smile on her face. 

"Hey Kaiden." She greeted as I made my way to her.

Casting my eyes down to her stomach I realized how big her stomach had actually gotten. Words stuck in my throat as I observed the swollen belly that contained my child. 

"Kaiden?" Clicking her fingers in front of my face Laura gave me a friendly but worried look.

"So it's true."

"What's true?"

"That you wore something tight to show off you baby bump."

Sighing she placed a hand on her hip, "I know I should have asked you but I decided better now that later when I get bigger."

"Right, no your right.Sorry."

"Are you ok?"

Leaning against a locker nearby I looked her dead in the eyes, she had eyes I could get lost in if I looked too long. I had always watched her from a distance and thought she was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen, but she was better off without me in her life.

Nodding once I smiled then straightened up, "Fine, I have to go but I'll talk to you later?"

"Yeah, later." Waving once she turned on her heel then headed off down the hall.

I watched as she walked away. How had I not noticed how big she was when I carried her to bed last night? Everything seemed real now. 
And I was freaking out. 

"Kaiden?"

Turning around a tall blonde with a very nice chest stood with her back pressed against the locker beside me. "How can I help you?"

"You don't remember me?"

Searching my memory to place her face I came up blank, "Sorry I don't, who are you?"

"Maybe I could make you remember?" Before I could reply she pressed her lips to mine. It didn't take long for my body to begin moving in time with hers. Pulling away swiftly I said against her mouth. 

"Follow me." Grabbing her hand I pulled her into the janitor's closet before locking the door.

Laura and I weren't in a relationship, something she had made perfectly clear. I could still hook up with whoever I wanted, at least that's what I was going to tell myself.
