Michonne, Dad, Judith, and I ate a small breakfast together. After we ate, Dad said that Deanna wanted to talk to us all over at the Main House.
Our group headed over to the Main House, where every Alexandrian was gathered. There were enough seats for everyone to sit down. The chairs all faced a large dry erase board at the front of the living room, where Deanna was standing.
Ron was sitting across from the board. He invited me to sit next to him and then Dad sat next to me. It felt somewhat awkward, but I guess that's his fatherly instinct. Everyone was making small talk waiting for Deanna to be ready.
She cleared her throat, "Excuse me, our meeting has begun." She smiled and everyone went silent to hear what she had to say. We've never done anything organized like this.
"Everyone, this is how our work will be divided up from now on. I wrote down the names of everyone who is eligible for a job, which is basically everyone except the children. If we all chip in just a little, we'll get a lot of work done together and we'll get this group doing very well. Now, regarding job assignments, are there any concerns I should be aware of?" Deanna asked.
"Maggie is pregnant. She's twelve weeks along," Glenn spoke up and smiled at Maggie.
"Congratulations, you two! I'll give you the lighter work, Maggie, because if we're going to restart the population, we might as well protect the people doing it," Deanna said and smiled. I knew Maggie was tough as nails and could do anything despite being pregnant. But, if it was safer, I shouldn't care.
"You and Sarah will be doing the easier stuff, watering flowers, taking care of the gardens, housework...This kind of work keeps the community running smoothly and keeps morale up. It might be fun to focus on the domestic side of things like it was before," she gave a sincere smile to Maggie and Sarah, who looked about eight months pregnant.
"As for the rest of us, excluding the children, will split up the rest of the work assignments. Going out in search for supplies or for hunting, keeping watch of the walls, etc. Uh, Rick, is Carl capable of guarding the walls? You just stand on the walls and watch, we take turns doing it. I want to get Ron doing it too.I believe it's good for them to have some responsibility," she continued her explanation.
"Carl is perfectly capable to guard." Dad replied to her. I shrugged, it didn't seem big compared to the other things I've had to do. It actually sounded really boring.
"Alright, so who wants to take the night shifts guarding?" she said and turned to the board so she could write.
Michonne, Abraham, Eugene, and Daryl said they could.
"Great," Deanna said and wrote down their names.
"Now, Carl, Ron, and Enid will be doing some of the day shifts. I don't want them to always be doing it. Maybe only once a week, so they can enjoy spending time together," Deanna said.
"I have a plan for the adults. Rick, Glenn, Daryl, Abraham, Eugene, and all the men from my group, you guys will search for supplies every two weeks or so. Is that okay?" she looked at the men for them to accept.
They all nodded.
"Okay, that covers everything for now. Have a great day everyone, the shifts are on the board." she smiled and walked out the front door.
Everyone got up and started going out the door. Enid and Ron walked out together, holding hands. I told Dad I was going to take another walk around.
I started walking down the short street again, looking at how nice everything was. The nice houses, the flowers, and the garden where a woman was working.
"Hi, Carl!" the pregnant woman, Sarah, smiled cheerfully and waved.
"Could you come up here and help for just a quick minute? I can't finish pulling the rest of these weeds, it's so hard to bend," she said.
I walked up and started helping. In about five minutes we got the rest pulled.
"Wow," Sarah stated, "You are a great helper." She stuck out her hand as a sign of thanks and I shook it.
"No problem. How far along are you?" I asked.
"I'm a little over eight months, thank goodness we came here when we did. I don't think I would even consider keeping this baby if it wasn't for this place. We've been here for about nine months," she replied.
"Who's your husband?" I asked.
"His name is Bryan. We met after this all started," she explained.
"Well, you'll have a lot in common with Maggie. She met Glenn after it all started. Her family joined our group, and she stayed. She's really nice. I'll see you around," I smiled and left.
