I felt instantly nervous when I saw her. Ron just stood there, staring blankly into space.
She gave a look to me. It wasn't a look of hate or anything, just half-annoyed.
Understandable.
The other people got out of the trucks and started unloading their stuff. Jordan stood by the bed of the truck, waiting for someone to throw her bag down. They did and the heavy bag dropped to the ground with a loud noise. She struggled to pick it up, but got it after a few grunts. She walked over to me and Ron zoned back in when she got close.
"Need help?" He asked quietly. The bag was weighing her down.
"Yeah." She handed it over to Ron, who took it without any effort. Jordan breathed a sigh of relief. "Thanks."
"Carl, can I talk to you?" She asked and flipped her hair. I glanced at Ron, who wasn't looking at me but was staring at the ground, where he was kicking up dust with his boot.
"Sure. Ron, I'll be back in a little bit. Go on the porch and wait for me please?" I got his attention. He looked at me and nodded, and then headed off to the porch with the bag. Jordan and I walked over to the backyard of the nearest house so we could have some privacy.
"So... we need to figure something out." She glanced down and said.
"I know." I looked at her, but she didn't look up.
"I don't want to live here, I'll be honest. They suggested I would be happier here, so as usual I had to listen. But, we're going to have to tolerate each other, like it or not. I want to get to know you and Ron, can I?" She finally met my eyes.
"I don't have any problem with that. I don't want to avoid you. Just... you have to understand something." I said.
"Understand what?" She asked.
"...Ron and I are dating." I held my breath with anticipation of what she would say.
"Oh... I'm, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize that. Does he 'know'?" She sounded shocked.
"I told him." My eyes darted down.
"Is he okay?" She asked.
"Yeah, I think so. I just need you to know that I can't date you or anything. If 'it' happens, I won't leave you alone to deal with that. But I'm in love with him, it just isn't fair." I said.
"Oh. Okay." She sounded disappointed.
"But we can be friends. Ron and I could use a friend to hang out with." I half-smiled as sincere as I could. She looked relieved and grinned back.
The discussion was over so we went to the porch, where Ron was. He sat on the swing. I sat by him, and Jordan sat down by me, but at a good distance. I propped my left arm on my hip, so my hand was in the air. Ron held my hand and intertwined our fingers. Our hands fell to where our legs were touching. Jordan paid no attention to it.
Dad walked up to the porch with some unknown guy beside him. Ron and I separated our hands.
"Hey Jordan. Do you know which house you want to stay in?" Dad question her, who shrugged.
"I don't know anyone." She quietly said.
"Well, you could always stay here, at our house. We have a free room, so you could stay here for the time being, if you want to." Dad said.
She thought for a second. "I guess I'll stay here." She said and looked unsure at me. I nonchalantly nodded, to assure her it was fine.
"Are you sure?" The unknown guy said. I figured Jordan knew him because he's from the Hilltop too.
