Tears Of Fire

Chapter Twelve, Part One

We were in the car and I was in the front seat. We hadn’t even gotten to the beach and I was having a blast. I somehow managed to convince Gavin to put the roof down and it was awesome. We were riding with an illegal number of people but everyone guaranteed the cops wouldn’t catch us with Aura and Jade around. There was Gavin, Jade, me, and Lucifer in the front seat, in that order. Then in the back were Molly, Blaise, Aura, Aria, and Seth. The movie plans were cancelled once we heard about the bon fire. Everyone else was in another car. There were a few people I didn’t know but that didn’t worry me. The front seat was crowded but not too crowded. Gavin said he had the convertible custom built so that he didn’t have the PRND thing there. I was pressed tight against Lucifer and he put his arm around me. When we got to the dirt road leading to the beach, Jade managed to switch spots with Aria. Seth, being hesitant Seth, put his arm around Jade, because then they were squished together. Jade snuggled closer to him and he seemed happy that she didn’t push him away. I stood up kind of awkwardly holding onto the glass. I was like a little kid, trying to see if they were there yet. Lucifer pulled me back down, and trying to avoid landing on Aria, I landed on Lucifer. He wouldn’t let me wiggle away either, he had a firm grip on me where I was, sitting on his lap. I stuck my tongue out at him and he laughed. I curled up into a ball with my feet on the empty seat beside Lucifer. He pulled me closer to him so that my head was on his chest. He was warm and smelled of spring grass. I smiled; content where I was. I looked at the clock and saw that we had only been driving for a half an hour. I groaned and sat up.

“God, Gavin could you drive any slower?” I asked him.

“Well I could but we have a lot of people in the car so I don’t want anyone to fall out.” He told me sounding mature. I on the other hand was not mature.

“Think of it this way, everyone in the car is squished so no one will fall out. Also everyone here can, burn the earth,” I said looking to Blaise who smiled. “Soften the earth,” I said meaning molly and Jade. “Not hit the earth,” I said looking to Aura, Lucifer and Aria. “Or heal quickly.” I said, looking at everyone else. “So step on it!” I said and reached my foot over to the gas pedal. I pushed it down so that we were going at a decent speed. Gavin fumbled to slow down but when I gave him a look he sped up a little bit.

“Are you happy?” Gavin asked. I thought about his question. I could finally, truly answer yes.

“Yes. But for the record, I could outrun your driving any day.” I said and Lucifer nodded.

“I have no doubt of that.” Gavin said. “Don’t you ever hit a tree or something?” He asked.

“Never.” I said, sounding shocked. 15 minutes to go. I was starting to get impatient and when I’m impatient I stand up and walk or run. There was no room to walk or even run so you could think of it as I was dying, not literally.

“I could make you less impatient but you said you don’t like PDA” Lucifer whispered into my right ear, the ear closest to the door. He kissed my neck and I looked at him. He smiled a gorgeous smile, his green eyes genuinely happy at seeing me happy. I had to really concentrate on ignoring him kissing my shoulder, my neck, my ear, my jaw. I smiled. I turned my head so that I could whisper in his ear.

“No PDA and I don’t care if where we are doesn’t count as public. There are other people around.” I whispered to him. Lecturing him that other people may not like it.

“Then you may want to see your cousin, Jade is just like you.” Lucifer whispered back. I spun my head around, rolling over onto my knees beside Lucifer. Seth was, hesitantly but defiantly was, kissing Jade’s shoulder and cheek. Just little kisses that seemed as soft and light as Lucifer’s. I had a strange urge to say ‘awe’ like you do when you see a cute baby. I smiled. I nudged Aria and pointed to Seth. Jade was trying to ignore it but obviously was failing. Aria smiled and said,
