No one ever really knew this, about Nico, except for Leo... Kind of.

After a battle or war that occurred among the demigods, Nico would soon visit the underworld and find all the heroes who died and tell them that they won! He would tell them they were important and that he would send any personal messages that the heroes had to their friends and family, which he always did, and he would also make sure that they wouldn't be forgotten.

Leo knew this, because when Leo died for a bit, he did go to the underworld. Leo was there just a few moments before his spirit returned to his body. But, Leo was there long enough for Nico, after the speeches and etc that took place at camp the day they defeated Gaea, to quickly jump to the underworld.

Leo's spirit was already drifting away from the underworld and back to his body when he heard his name, "Leo?" It was Nico, "Valdez?"

Leo didn't get to answer, but he saw Nico quickly vanish. Nico had popped back into camp.

And from there I'm sure you all know; Nico talked to Percy, Jason, Will, and he also talked to Frank about Hazel's wedding before praying to his father. Perhaps he prayed asking if Leo was down there yet, or if something else happened, or maybe he prayed for a completely different reason. We may or may not ever find out. ;)
