I woke with a start. As soon as consciousness flooded into me, an overwhelming pain shot up through my arm. I screwed my eyes shut. I gripped the wound and bit my tongue to keep from screaming out. Turns out that I bit down so hard my tongue started bleeding. It hurt to much to swallow so my saliva pooled out of my mouth with a mix of my blood. I finally managed the strength to lift my sleeve and look at my source of agony. I gasp as I look at my bandages, there was nothing wrong with it. No blood, no rip, it wasn't even tight! But my veins, they were near black. The veins surrounding my injury were popping out like last night and were as black as a moonless night. My arm throbbed as I reached my hand towards my veins. As soon as my hand made contact with a blushing vein the pain dispersed. The blackness faded away as my vein lowered back into my arm. An just like that it was over. I let out a shaky sigh. "Hey, you okay?"

Someone in the room spoke up. My breath hitched as I pull down my sleeve. The blood and saliva mix was still trickling down my chin. "Yeah, I landed on Bobo so in good." I release the breath I don't know I was holding. They weren't talking about me, that's means they didn't notice. I turned my head I've my shoulder to look at the situation. A concerned Larry helped a fallen Emma off of the ground. "Your welcome for being an unintentional cushion!" Bobo wheezed out. I let a small laugh escape my lips. The room sways lightly but I ignore it. "Sorry! I didn't mean to land on you!" Emma quickly apologizes. Bobo smiles. "It's okay, just be more careful next time. "

"Rise and shine everybody!" The man who let us sleep here opens the door and speaks in a sing song voice. We all get ready for the day. We clean up the room and head downstairs or breakfast. It's scrambled eggs with some type of meat. "We start a fire and cook the eggs on a metal pan given to us from the suppliers. We also have a sort of farm just out of town who provides us with fruits, veggies, meat, and plenty more. " The man speaks to us as we all hungrily scarf down the food. Once done we get our stuff and leave. "If you ever need a place I sleep just come back here okay?" He says with a hint of loneliness in his voice. I understand why he welcomes us with open arms. When he was hurt he was abandoned by his own people but went back to help. (Well Bobo mostly) Even though we were the ones to hurt him, he understands that it's self defense.

We walk out the house and are greeted to a very happy and excited Sam-Sam. She runs up to us and jumps into us. She happily licks all of our faces. She retreats eventually to let us breath. We open the gate and close it behind us. We walk down the silent, empty streets. After walking for a while we see a woman in a hood running from a few raised. The guy did say that at night people go out to clear the town. We jump into action and kill the raised. One manages to tackle me but Bobo kills it before it can get a bite. I nod a thanks and look to the woman. Emma is next to her checking if she was okay. Next thing I know they are hugging. Her hood falls down to reveal her face. It was Emma's mother. I knew this from when she would FaceTime Emma while I was around. She thanks us and leads us to her 'base'. "Please make yourselves at home." She speaks in a gentle voice. Everyone goes in while I stay outside with Sam-Sam. She sits next to me, guarding me. I feel a painful sting in my hurt arm. I wince and Sam-Sam whimpers. She looks at me and I grip my arm. "It's okay girl, I'm not going anywhere." I then put our foreheads together and start humming. I'm not thinking of any specific song, but instead just humming whatever noises I hear. Eventually it turns into a song. It was teddy bear by Melanie Martinez. I hug Sam-Sam close and start to feel the effects of sleep. Sam-Sam licks my face and whimpers softly. It's not long before I'm under the spell of sleep deprivation.

I spend some time catching up with my mom when I notice Larry is getting nervous. He constantly looks around and can't sit still. "Hey Larry, what's wrong?" I ask. "Have you seen Gabberdink anywhere?" He asks with pure worry for our friend. My eyes widen as I notice that she was missing. It was already dark out and it was difficult I see outside. Then we heard Sam-Sam barking. We all rush outside to see Gaby laying on the floor, passed out. Sam-Sam is sitting next to her, occasionally nudging her hand. She didn't budge. Bobo and Larry rushed up to her and picked up her body. Then they dragged her inside. Sam-Sam was forced to stay outside again. They set Gaby down in the middle of the room. Her face had heavy evidence of pain. She was sweating while her injured arm would twitch occasionally. Wait... no. I walk up to her and quickly yank her sleeve up. It wasn't bleeding but her veins had turned black and were popping out of her arm. I panicked and jumped back. I couldn't peel my eyes away from the scene. I quickly pulled the others away from her. Confusion was written all over their faces. I stayed silent, watching, waiting. My mom just stood behind me, equally as confused as the others. I didn't move an inch, fearing it might trigger something. It felt like I was tied up in a spider web. I was trapped, unable to escape the situation. My best frie was on the ground with an infected raised bite in the same house as my family. The only family I possibly have left.
