I felt free, free from Nat's grasp. I had sobbed for an hour or so after the police left, my friend was still dead, however I had owed it to her, so Nat could be found. Maddy's funeral took place in two days and I was extremely unprepared. The grief had temporarily paused my life.
A gentle knock pounded my door. "Vienna?" Adria's voice asked.
"Come in," I granted her entrance. She closed the door behind her and sat at the end of my bed. "Gosh," she exclaimed in disgust, "when was the last time you showered?!"
"What day is it?" I thought out loud.
"It's Monday, 7:58am" Adria announced after looking on her phone."Maddy's funeral is Wednesday." I pressed my lips together to form a strait line.
"How about you go and shower, then we go shopping for a dress to wear to her funeral?" Adria suggested.
"Haven't you got school?" I frowned.
"That doesn't matter," she expressed a serious tone, "you come first."I got out of my bed and got into the shower. It was the first time I'd left my bedroom in days.
I changed into a white dress and a pair of white flats. Then I dried my hair and applied some makeup to cover where I had been crying. After I put my hair into a French braid. I knocked on Adria's door and we got into mothers car. Adria had recently passed her driving test and was embracing her new sense of freedom.
We drove to the nearest mall and Adria parked up, then lead me to a shop I had never heard of. "I'm paying." Adria dangled the card I front of me then laughed. "Don't worry about the cost."
Our mother was a doctor so money troubles was something my siblings had never experienced.I walked over to a long black dress with Adria. "Try it on," she advised me, "I think you used to be an 8."
I picked up the dress and headed to the changing room, Adria picked up a dress for herself and then picked up another telling me that I should try it on too.She threw the other dress at me as I struggled to catch it, then entered a cubicle. I drew the curtain closed and tried on the first dress. Due to its length I struggled to walk and ruled it out as a possibility. "Come out and show me to dress." I heard Adria call through the curtain.
I pushed open the curtain and waddled into the walkway where Adria stood. "maybe not,"she giggled under her breath, even though I could hear it anyway.
I went back into the cubicle like a penguin and took off the dress. I picked the one Adria chose off the hanger and unzipped the back. Once I was in it I was unable to do the sip back up so I shouted Adria. "Get outside!" I called frantically as the dress almost fell down.
Adria rushed out and zipped up the back of my dress. Her dress was stunning. It started a couple of inches above her knee at the front, then cascaded to halfway down the backs of shins at the back. The top half was lace and the black material underneath was like a vest, then the lace continued to her wrists.
I turned to face the mirror. My dress was plain and strapless, it had a sweetheart neckline. The skirt part of the dress jutted out and ended just above my knees.
"We should go pay." Adria smiled contently and returned to her cubicle to change.
Once I was changed and in the line to pay my phone went off in my pocket. I pulled it out and read the text several times over...
'Enjoying the funeral shopping?
