As Annabeth walked away from Percy her heart shattered into a million pieces. Forever. That was a long time. She looked over her shoulder and saw Percy. Broken. She did that. Against her better judgement she ran back to him. Tentatively, she placed a hand on his shoulder. "Percy, I can't do this." She bit her lip, trying to contain the tears that were threatening to spill. "Don't go then." There was something in his eyes that Annabeth had never seen before. Determination maybe? "Look, you know that I don't want to do this. I can't do this to you. But if you ever got hurt because of me I'd never forgive myself. It's just too risky."
"What's life without risk? Wise Girl, I can't lose you."
Annabeth's bottom lip trembled. "Percy, please, don't make it harder than it already is. I just have to give you one last thing before I go, so you'll remember me."
"How could I possibly forget you?"
Slowly she took off her leather cord, the beads sliding around.
"Here."
"Annabeth no, they're your memories, your story."
"But you're also part of my story, and the chances are I'm not going to live much longer. The Fates have something else planned for me."
"I can't take it. I won't."
"Percy," the tears were now flowing "Please, I can't stay here much longer, I'll attract monsters and do the opposite of what I intend. It'll put you in danger."
"Can I make a last request?"
Annabeth wiped her eyes. "Anything."
Percy hugged her and tied the cord around her neck once more. Kissing her tears away, and then finally once on the lips. He rested their foreheads together and whispered one word.
"Live."
