Evelyn
I was so tired from wedding planning, being sick every day with the first trimester blues, and trying to keep Princeton from getting into any and everything. I needed help, Michael just wasn't doing it. I decided to move my mother in with us, because it seems like I've been seeing him less and less since the engagement.
"I don't see why you get pregnant this soon anyway!" My mother snaps as she peels the potatoes. "You got my baby 10months old, and now you decide to have another one."
I roll my eyes, stirring the broth for the gumbo. "Can we not talk about this right now?"
"What? Don't get an attitude with me girl. Look at you, baby on your hip, and a baby in your stomach!" She says kissing her teeth. "You're on your third husband, and the first two are dead."
"Mom!" I snap turning to her
She sighs. "Well at least my two baby girls came out good."
I sigh. "Have you talked to Rita?"
"Yes, she is the one who took me shopping for the new summer dresses." She smiles
I turn back to the gumbo, cradling Princeton on my hip. "And Honey?"
"Who?" She says chopping up the carrots. "Who is Honey?"
I shake my head. She knows exactly who Honey is. "Sonja, mom!"
She huffs. "Nope, the girl hasn't even been to see her grandmother. I have a great grandbaby who doesn't even know his Memaw." She stands, taking Princeton from me. "I love all of my babies, and I just want everyone together again. We used to be close, but you always seem to--- "
"Mom, she will be here..." I say lowly
"How?" She snaps her neck to me. "You choose these men over these girls. Sonja needed you after her papa died, and all you did was move on to the investment banker, and now our on with the next millionaire. Do you love him? Does he love you? What do you know about this man other than him "saving" you from Rick, who I told you not to marry?"
I slam the spoon down. "Why do you do this?" I scream, rubbing my temples. "Every time I want to be happy, you have to downplay it."
"Happy? How are you happy, Aveline? You can hardly stand on your own, but yet your rich man can't even take off for one day to take care of you. He comes home at all times of night, and you just accept it." She says touching my face. Lately I have been sick to my stomach, wondering is me marrying Michael is the right thing to do.
Door opens
"And what is this?" Michael says walking into the house. "How are you, mama?" He smiles hugging my mother, but she's standoffish.
She kisses her teeth. "Hello Mr. Brown..." She speaks nonchalantly walking out of the room with Princeton. "I'll finish dinner later."
"So what is going on in here?" Michael says, kissing my cheek. I touch his face, as he rubs my belly. "How are my babies?"
I give a low smile. "Nothing baby, I just wanted to get started on dinner for tonight."
"You sure that's all?" He says looking towards the door my mother just walked through
I let out a low sigh. "Not right now, Michael."
"What? So I just accept being disrespected in my own house? Huh? I refuse to walk around my own home, and be ridiculed. And you're not even sticking up for me, Ev!" He says walking over to the barstools. "This is my house, and I will not be disrespected!"
