Holes in Our Souls

Darkness.

That's all I can see. It's hard to make out details and figures that swarm around me as my eyes flutter open slowly. There's a sound that rings in my ears as I try to move my hand, finding that it's restrained down to the surface I lay on. The blackness surrounding my vision clears and I see a person with a surgical mask looking down at me with bleak, grey eyes.

Within his eyes I see emptiness and a sense of loss of control. He speaks but the sound that I can't identify continues to fill the room and drowns his voice out as I now try moving my legs. Just like my arms, they are strapped to the table. The person standing above me notices my slight struggle and turns around to grab a syringe sitting beside him, making me scared and frightened.

I jerk my arm away from the approaching needle as a different pair of hands holds my limb down and forces the liquid into my veins. The sound that once filled the room subsides as my body goes limp and the person leaves my side. I watch as the man takes off his green robe that is stained red and removes the mask covering his face, letting me see the smile stretched across his lips.

"Don't worry Matthew. It's just like you're brand new." His smile is all I can make out as once again my eyes shutter close and I fall into a deep sleep.
