Silence had stretched across the barren land as the rain had stopped and the breeze blew in the other direction of the tunnel exit. The night still blinded everyone as we all sat crouched in the shadow of the hills surrounding us. I sit up and scan the darkness for any signs of a drone but I cannot see through the tears building at the edge of my eyes.
Though I've kept my emotions hidden throughout this whole ordeal, I cannot help but to let them show through now as my heart beats erratically against my chest and my hands shake nervously. I can hear from within the group a person praying softly to themselves to whatever God there seems to be in this cruel and vicious world they created.
"Alright, now or never people. On my count of three," I whisper to the group as everyone readied themselves to run for their lives in the direction of the enemy. On my left and right side sits Tom and Chris, his wives hand in his so to keep her by his side as they dart into the open land. "One..."
Before I can reach two, a person from the group stands up and runs, sending everyone else in a frenzy as they follow him over my word of protection. Not willing to risk my life within the tunnel, I join in on everyone's panicked attempt of freedom and zigzag across the field so not to get hit by any sniper fire. I stay focused on the wooded area ahead of me as I forget my friends behind me and the rest of the group who fall in front of me, forcing me to leave them bleeding out in the open.
As I reach a safe position behind a tree, I grip my chest to calm my racing heartbeat and steady my breathing as I peer over the side. Just in my proximity I can see bodies laying face down in the grass and a few who are still attempting to save their lives by crawling towards where I stand at the edge of the woods. I glance up to the top of the hills surrounding the woods and tunnels to seek out any drones who might be firing at us from their hideout.
I hear the sound of a gunshot and jump back behind the tree, feeling the heat of a bullet flying past me and hit the ground in front of the tree I'm adjacent too. A cry for help rings behind the reverberating shot as I take a glance from the other side of the tree. I see the tall shadow of a man crouching over the figure of a dead body a good ten meters away from where I stand.
"Chris!" I hear Tom call from the far right of me as I see the shadow of him running back into the open towards who I believe is Chris and Kelly. Jumping over to a tree that is closer to where they lay, I try to catch the brunette father's attention but he is busy weeping over the unmoving form of his wife.
Scanning the hilltops again, I take a chance to save my friend's lives and sprint over to Chris and meet up with Tom who looks down on the young blonde women. She lays face up with blood pooling in her gaping mouth that spills over and slides down her cheeks, likes tears of blood. Chris cries aloud, cursing the drones and their handlers who had killed his loving wife. Tom and I force our friend to stand up and take both of his arms in our hands, guiding him quickly back to the woods.
Just before we reach the edge of the woods I feel Chris' arm fall out of my grip and Tom lets go of his other as he goes completely limp in our hands. The tall brunette lays in the grass unmoving with a hole in the back of his neck. Without saying anything to Tom, we race back into the woods and continue running with our backs to the drones and the lives that were wasted on the battlefield.
